om602.962 into non mercedes vehicle
i'm new to the site, so if this is in the wrong place, please let me know.
i've got a base model 97 dodge dakota that i've been planning to put a diesel engine in. i came across a really good deal on an engine from a 1990 300d which from my research, is the om602.962 with electronic emissions. i've got almost everything figured out to make it work in my truck including the transmission adapter. my question relates to the emissions equipment. can i bypass it with no problems, or should i grab the computer out of the car that the engine is in to make it run all the emissions like normal? or is the emissions equipment even ran off of the computer? i'm completely new to mercedes diesel engines so forgive me if i'm thinking too hard and making this complicated. before any comments, i'm aware the 2.5 isn't going to make the truck fast, etc. i'm only doing it to get some better mpgs from the truck and also because i've never seen it done. this truck doesn't pull heavy loads or anything. i only use it to drive to work. thanks for any help that anyone can give me |

As an example, on my project, swapping an OM617 into a 380SL, I'm using the EGR controller not only for EGR but it is also the source of the tach signal for the tachometer... who would have guessed. Eventually I'll likely eliminate the EGR but keep the EGR controller for the tach.

Grab the ECU and harness at least. You'll need it to control idle.
You'll want to do this if you're not transferring the emissions stuff - http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/212097-wastegate-actuator-swap-om602-962-a.html . The airflow meter is considered emissions stuff; not needed for idle or running without emissions stuff. If your 602 has a flap in the pipe leading from the turbo compressor outlet to the intake manifold, wire the flap open. Sixto 87 300D |

is there a way to have this engine idling on an engine stand before dropping it in the car? i know the engine runs, but after removing the emissions(if i decide to do it), i'd like to have it running before i drop it in place so that i know it's ready to run after it's dropped in place |

I guess you can start it out of the car if you have a stout enough stand. All you need is oil in the sump and a bottle of fuel the IP can sip from.
IIRC, and I raise a big flag here for you to confirm, the idle adjustment on that engine is shown below as the hex tip rod with a locknut on the back end of the IP above the round red plastic thing (ELR). There's little reason to test the engine without emissions gear until you install the engine in the vehicle. The engine isn't dependent on a tight intake system to run. It will run happily without an intake manifold. There's even less reason to set base idle without the load of a transmission in D or the mass of a flywheel, pressure plate and clutch. You'll be doing it all over again in the vehicle. If you just want to hear it run, that's a smart thing to do now, but even smarter to have done it when you first got the engine Sixto 87 300D |

Diesel Swaps
The 4btswaps forum has been a great source of information for my diesel swap into my 2000 Dakota.
I have the same userid over there.

There's a 93 300D being sold locally here that could use that engine, and it's a nice looking car too.
