Shifting an auto manually.

Will shifting an auto manually always override a vacuum leak or flairing.

In other words, my 300 d has a vac leak, but shifts perfectly every time manually.

It started flairing in 3rd but I can shift manually every time with 0 flair at all.

Thanks,
Revolverman.

Do you have a apply chart for this transmission?

I don't know about yours specifically, but some transmissions have overrun bands / clutches that apply only when the shifter is moved below drive. When manually shifting, you might be feeling a bind on the 2 - 3 shift rather than a good shift.

In any event, fix the cause of the flare.

Some of the advertising material I have on 1980's Mercedes models specifically indicate the automatic transmission can be shifted manually. Is there something different in these transmission that allows this - and is it OK to do on a regular basis? (that is, if it isn't a modern electronic Tiptronic-type that is designed for this). I know of someone who manually shifted his older Chevy transmission and destroyed it in a short time.

I think it's more fun to drive a Mercedes with a manual transmission - shifting an automatic manually might be a good compromise on models that weren't available with a stick shift.

In the words of Stu Ritter, a Mercedes master tech who was on a previous list I frequented, when asked the same question: "Go ahead, shift, shift."

Just use common sense.

As long as you do not go beyond the allowed vehicle speed per gear, you'll be fine.

For example, don't shift into S or 3rd gear when you're driving at 70mph on the freeway.

^^Yup

Just watch the little dots around the speedometer: 62mph-ish is the max for 3d

My 300TD will flare going from 3rd to 4th, but only if the road speed is less than 40 mph. If I put it in "S" and then manually upshift to 4th once I exceed 40, it shifts perfectly.

I think there's a lock out for neutral and reverse that kicks in at about 10kph - but - isn't there one for that situation too? (I don't know - he says in best Scooby Doo voice)

From my understanding, you can switch to Neutral in case of emergency, but not into Reverse.
