Temp.?
 

What should the temp. gauge read when the engine is warmed up? I think my thermostat may be stuck, heater doesn't really work at highway speeds but it does great in stop and go, makes me think the thermostat stays open all the time. I've never noticed that the heater didn't work well, but I rarely get to use it.

Replace the monovalve "insert". It is located on the firewall in front of the passenger compartment. I had the same problem and this is what it took to fix it.

Should read an RCH above 80.

It has only been going to about 60 but today it went up to 70 or so. It was warmer today so I didn't need the heater, but I tried it and it really pumped out the hot air. A bad thermostat would also explain the worse mileage in colder weather. Thanks, I guess I'll get a new thermostat and put it in, I'm going to flush the system and put new antifreeze in while I'm at it.

Fortunately for us, thermostats in general fail in the open postion.
This will result in overcooling, and a low reading on the gauge.

Another indicator would be a fluctuation at the gauge. It will read cooler when you are on the freeway with lots of air going through the radiator.

I figure it must have stuck in the summer, probably never got cool enough to close.

My '85 reads 85-90 pretty consistantly. Even then the heating was marginal so I replaced the monovalve insert. The rubber diaphram was split. Boy did that make a huge difference! Now I get more than enogh heat.
