Can Anyone Here Beat This???

In 1982 my son learned to drive and passed his test in my new 300D.

In 2002 my grandson learned to drive and passed his test in my 20-year-old 300D - then ran it for over a couple of years.

In 2012, last Sunday, my great-grandson (4 years old) was seen driving my 30-year-old 300D around the car park…

Hmmmm…….... I wonder if it’s gonna last another 12 years???

It should be fine so long as you don't let that 4 year old carry on driving it.

I doubt anyone would beat that for a number of reasons.

1) You were sane enough to give a NEW car MBZ to a 16 years old to learn to drive and used it as the test drive vehicle. If anything happened then you would be $30K in the hole at 1982 $ value.

2) All boys in the family

3) It is illegal to put a 4 years old behind the wheel unless it is on private property.

Wish you luck in 12 years time.

Most of the four year olds that I meet whilst taking my two four year old daughters to day care seem to be more rational than their stressed out crazy mothers! I'd rather see the four year old driving than the self righteous carnage in car parks made by nutty over worked stressed out parents. I read recently that parents with young children are most likely to be amongst the most depressed and unhappy in society - it shows at the local school we have to pass on the way to day care - there was a cat fight in the car park the other day as a result of a parking dispute.

sort of...

in 1931, my grandfather purchased a new model a ford coupe...

in 1971, my father started driving it for him, and assisting with the repaint of the vehicle... (apparently 40 year old paint cracks a tad...) the original engine was getting a little tired at that point, so he and I (ok, I'm only 3 at the time, but I helped some...) dropped the pan, and POURED NEW BABBIT INTO THE RODS...
we got the car going, and had fun in parades etc with the car for a while... we went overseas for a spell, due to air force duties, and returned in 84, cleaned up the car again, and started driving it around town (lifetime plates are amazing...) mostly for just fun trips to the movies etc...

in 1985, when I graduated high school, grandpa brings the car for me to take to the beach in... STUPIDLY I chose to take my toyo celica, since it's such a drive with mountains and such... but the car was available to me.

in 1992 my younger brother's wedding the car gets some use in pictures and family stuff, and we drive it around town after.

the same vehicle is proudly parked in my sister's garage for her currently 10 year old son to someday drive, if we don't sell it...

so... 71 years and counting... same family with the car...

how's that?

I suppose I should have pointed out that the little guy was not alone in the car but I do understand he was changing the gears.

The worst part of having a Great-grandson is having a son who is a Grandfather!

Yeah. Parents these days are paranoid about their kids, keep them spoilt, caged and wrapped up in cotton wool and then just set `em loose on the rest of us when they turn 16!

I had complete freedom to explore the world from a very early age when I was a kid and likewise did my own.

I leased this car along with two 240D`s as company cars and never envisaged I would still be running this one 30 years later! I was running a Diesel Injection workshop and they just seemed an obvious choice. My first diesel car was a 180D I bought from Perkins Diesel in 1964 when I left the company to open my own business and I have always run a diesel since. We had been using it as a test bed for development of the C99, a prototype 1800cc diesel for cars and light commercial vehicles. The C99 was toast but the old 180 engine had very low mileage.

71 years is pretty good going but I doubt it has anywhere near the 576,000miles of my old tub.

Awesome stories Gents.

I dont have a comparable story. I do have my daughter behind the wheel when possible. We started at 1.5-2 years old standing in daddies lap holding the wheel. Now at 3.5 she can steer the car on her own while I control the pedals and keep a loose hand on the wheel. This is ofcourse only done on private property with no chance of contact with another vehicle.
We expect she will we able to drive long before the state deems appropriate, thus making her far more prepared for the responsibility of public driving when the day comes.

On a Benz note. We plan for our daughter to drive one of our 300 diesels.

That the one I saw? Don't sell it.... Talk about a piece of family history that could never be replaced...

Great story Beagle ... mine's a two-generation car but unless I train my cat to drive I've got no one else to corrupt. I'm hoping my nephew ends up being an MB nut, though ... you never know.
vstech, my dad has a 1936 Chrysler Airflow that my grandfather bought new ... grandfather drove it to college, dad drove it to college. It's been sitting (garaged) for 20+ years but I hope someday to get it going again. My dad wants it to go in my garage, which I'd be fine with!

My grandfather purchased a 1968 Austin Healey 3000 MK III new in Holland. He moved to Libya where his 4 daughters learned how to drive on the car. He moved back to Houston and drove the car another 10 years until my grandmother told him it was unsafe and he parked it in the Garage. When I was 15 he taught me how to drive stick on the car. The car then remained in the garage until a few weeks ago when I sold it for $20,000 sight unseen to a collector in NY. It had not been run in 13 years. My grandfather thought it was the greatest car on earth, he told me it handled better and was more "nimble" than my 1998 M3 that I got new. After he passed no one was really interested in undertaking a restoration on the car including myself. I hope it continues on.
