hot tank intake manifold?

My manifold is off the car and I was considering getting it cleaned.
I read somewhere that someone did it and they thought it was a mistake. Not sure why and I can't find that thread now.
People seem to think it doesn't make a difference anyway.
Sure is a lot of crud in there, though.

Opinions?

Thanks,
Jeff

It can't hurt to clean it.

if you do clean it I'd block off the egr so it stays nice and clean.

You can always burn out the gunk with a propane torch and some diesel

Don't put it into a caustic cleaner- you'll end up with less manifold than you started with.

There is no "hot tank" for aluminum.

The only way to clean the inside is the slow and painful way of using brushes and solvent. Mineral spirits or similar will assist the job with sufficient time. They will dissolve the deposits slowly, but a brush is required to finish the job.

A brush with a wire handle that can be bent is preferred to access the interior via the EGR passage.

Brian,
Thanks for the input.
I was just re-reading a post of yours talking about "jet-hot"
and that was what I was thinking of--not "hot tank"
Others have suggested carb cleaner as the solvent..
Looks like some elbow grease time.

Jeff

You're referring to these guys:

Jet-Hot Ceramic Coatings

Fancy website. Poor product.

The exhaust manifold heated and flaked the coating off within about three years. Now the SD has a silver and rust manifold instead of just a plain rust manifold.

I'm quite sure they won't clean the inside of the intake for you..............

Soak it in a bucket of aluminum-safe solvent (make sure it doesn't contain lye, aka sodium hydroxide, aka NaOH) before you get to scrubbing it will save you a ton of time

not quite so...

the aluminum "carburetor DIP" sold in the gallon paint cans, works GREAT to remove and PRISTINE clean the intakes... however, the intake will not fit in the can... you'd need 3 cans, and a deep bucket to dip the manifold in...
on the 603 crossover tube, I can dip one end, then the other, and have a perfectly clean tube... the 617 intake is just a tad longer...
I have a 15Gallon steel drum I use for sorting stuff, it's deep enough for the manifold, but that would be over 150.00 in cleaner... I don't know.
I suppose you could set the manifold up so all the ports are up, and seal the turbo inlet, and fill the manifold with the dip, but that stuff is REALLY bad news if it spills... not for the faint of heart...

I used biodiesel and various brushes to remove the bulk of the crud, then followed up with a bucket of hot soapy water, rinsing in more hot water. X2 on blocking the EGR valve. This is a job that you won't want to repeat.

What is it in the bio that makes it a good cleaner?
I have both methanol & KOH sitting around.

Rooster, did you get the manifold cleaned out?

I tried using a steam cleaner to blast it out one time. better have your rain gear on and a face shield. that black crap goes every where.

Here is a thread from a while back on this subject.

Post #10 is links to a guy burning it out on his VW TDI.
