Exhaust Discharge..
I started my 300SDL up today, dead cold. I was idling it for a while then revved it good a few times to "clear its throat".. got out of the car, looked beind and there is a spray of oil-coated chunks of carbon say 10" long by 5" wide, thats the best way I can describe it. I noticed it once before, didn't think much of it.
I saw this once on a 420SEL that had a totally screwed engine, you would revv it and black raw oil would come out of the tailpipe. I dont use much oil, maybe 1/qt every 3k miles.. what is this? If it means anything, I just replaced the center muffler about 1000 miles ago, not sure if it did it before then. |

Probably normal. Diesel fuel doesn't burn very well in a cold engine, and there is always some soot, so you get droplets of unburned fuel, droplets of water from condensation, and soot blowing out on startup.

soot mark
mine does it too (after cold startup)
ps: also have fairly new exhaust under 1 yr old and was not leaving soot with the old system
