Fuel Capacity Question

Last night I filled up my tank (only the 2nd time in the 4 weeks I've owned it) and, according to the pump, managed to put in 22.4 Gal in what I thought was an 18.5 Gal tank.

I thought that before I call gas the station owner and advised him that the pump needed to be calibrated, I'd see if anyone else had experience this.

deuce:

Are you sure your 95 E300D has only a 18.5 gal tank?

I thought MB put in a bigger tank for that car so it can boast an 800 miles range.

According to the owners manual it's 18.5 US Gal. It also says that includes 2.5 Gal for reserve. Maybe they meant 2.5 in addition. Still, that's only 21 Gal.

The 95 E300D and the 500E had a larger tank. I think it was 23.5 or 23.8 gallons, can't remember exactly.

I think TimFreeh is right that it is in the 23.5 gal area.

I have a 1997 sales brochure and the E300D uses the same engine but different body (W210) vs. your 95 (W124) but the figures should be similar.

It says at 35 MPG it can go 730 miles. That is about 21 gal plus 2.5 gal in reserve so it is close to 23.5.

Exclamation Wow!

That's a nice suprise. Although there goes my bragging rights of 30 MPG in town .

Speaking of, anyone have some averages for MPG on similar models? I'd like to know what to expect and be able to use MPG as an indicator of potential problems.

Deuce:

The 1997 brochure says 28/35 (city/hwy), EPA rating.

I have a 91 300D 2.5 Turbo - On winter grade fuels it typically gets 32-34 MPG in mixed city/highway environments. I've gotten as high as 37 MPG in the summer.

I would expect pretty similar values for the E300D.

Thanks for all the info. I'll keep you posted on how much fuel and MPG over the next few months, for those that are interested.

The W210 diesels (96-99) have a 21.1 gal tank (including a 2.6 gal reserve) according to the owner's manual. Mine gets 32-34 mpg on the highway and the EPA rating for the 99 model was 26 city and 36 highway.
