Interesting lead.... suicide doors?

So, was talking to local guy today and he mentions this old MB sitting in a nearby barn for the last 25 years... with suicide doors and a 4 banger diesel engine... any ideas as to what that would be? Hoping to get a little more info in a couple days. Not showing TOOOO much interest in it for fear it will suddenly disappear...

Didn't the old 170d sedans have suicide doors, here, if you look where the door handle is I believe it does.

Probably a 170, a pre-war design that had lots of structural wood in the doors and body.

The diesel is probably the side valve motor that was used up through the 180D ponton.

The 170's are really cool looking cars. I'd love to have one, but you better have a big pile of cash to restore it. They are extremely rare in the US.

Isn't there a 170DS with upgraded trim over the 170D?

Could it be the granddaddy of Diesel powered passenger cars the 1936 W138 260D?

Id be shocked if there are any two sixties in the US.

I saw a one seventy once in person in the Elkhart area. I wanted it.

There were two in Portland, OR for sale a few weeks ago. Both by the same guy. I wanted them bad, but it's just not in the card for me.

They would be a sweet town car or with modern diesel power a really cool sleeper streed rod. Since they can be bought fairly reasonably I would think a sanitary one would hold its value.

Can't wait to find out more about it. What I do know, It's been sitting so ling that the brake fluid has turned to jelly. The car runs. The original owner passed almost 30 years ago and the car was park in the barn and has been sitting since.

Actually, not so.

It's the 220 cars and the early Adenauers that cost a lot to restore, mostly because people screw you on the parts, not because they are particularly exotic.

Except, of course, custom bodies, but custom bodies of any car cost more.

I bought my 170D for 750.00 and spent another 400.00 getting a second car with three extra diesel engines, one of which was rebuilt and put on a test stand for use in a school, until the school goit closed.

I have wanted to save the second car and put a 170 gas engine in it.
Have been talking to txjake about that, but got sick, and then I had to travel. Got sick again for the winter, so now am behind on my buildoimng plans for my workshop, though I did get a tire machine that was being trashed from a bankrupt garage.

There's a regsiter of 260s in the US. The people are paranoid about them. There's at least one in Michigan and one source I talked to last year, said there were 49 total in the US, more than in Germany. The museum in Untertuerkheim never thought they were a big deal.
