1981 300sd First time owning

Just picked it up yesterday... Its in the 200k club. what should i change and check on it besides the obvious.... AC doesnt work.... Can i convert it to 134a when i redo the system or does it have to stay at r15. Any other widsom or knowledge would be awesome.... i know very little about these cars but very familiar with diesels...

Congrats on the car. You can change it to R134a if you want but dont expect it to work very well. When I redo mine I am keeping it R12.

My AC didn't work either until I changed the monovalve. Maybe you're problem is just as simple.

the previous owner of my 300D changed it to freeze12... so you can always go that route. it blows "cool" but not "ice cold" like real r12 would

The temperature of the discharge air is dependent on the ambient temperature. If the ambient is 90F., it's perfectly capable of achieving 40F. at the vents.

R12 has additional capability, but "cool" and "ice cold" are still meaningless without actual ambient temperatures.

A good leak free system lasts a long time. Why not repair it well and stay with R12?

Welcome to Mercedes ownership! My first Benz was a 1981 300SD, it got me hooked. A few more later and I still have the W126. Great cars. Do you know about the free roadside assistance for life? Save me a few times with the '66.

This site is by far the best resource for information and a great group. If you need any parts give Phil a call at the 888 number in the top right corner. Always a pleasure to deal with, great prices, fast shipment, he has earned my business many times over!

Again, welcome to Mercedes Ownership!

I will put pictures up tomorrow and do a walk around... so far i have noticed that the AC compressor is cracked and has no ability to come back to life.... other than that everythign works great... paint is near perfect and interior is probably a 8 out of ten with no cracks on plastic or leather.... Its got 236k miles. Sold my H1 hummer for this car i liked it so much...

I would love to get my AC and heater working... i can feel heat on the dash but not much air comes out of vents or defrost.... I have only had car in driveway for about an hour now and will throw some pictures up tomorrow...

Wow that's clean! I like the light colored interior. The early funky labels on the climate control are neat too.
