Yep, that sure looks like a 115 turbo 116. That's a rare bird.

yes indeed. there were several companies in germany that could retrofit the OM616 with a turbo. i think there was/is a company in india that got the rights to manufacture the OM616 with turbo charger (in mass production) for a knock-off version G-Wagen...pretty cool and rare. i'd spring the $400 if it were close to me

It's a shame that car sat around & rusted like that. It's going to need a lot of work now. I find the turbo interesting, though it couldn't have come from the factory that way. Also, the radio antenna is on the right of the hood, instead of the left of the trunk - I've only seen that on Euro cars.

I'm not sure if that turbo is retrofitted from an OM617 turbo, a kit or from some other place, but it IS possible someone got a dealer (or maybe a Banks dealer?) to install it. There was a guy in Everett who was selling a turbo'd W115 and a Rajay turbo kit. I almost bought the kit, but then figured installing it on my 300K 240D would probably finish of what's left of my engine.

The Rajay turbo kits were apparently popular for a while, and there was a kit made specifically for the W115 240D. The problem is these engines weren't designed for turbos and thus you would want to keep the boost low. I have heard you CAN feel the performance increase though, even if it's slight. Where a 240D really needs help is on long grades, and I'd be afraid one would run high EGTs and damage something. You'd absolutely want to add boost & exhaust temp gauges.

"Galleried Pistons" and Oil Jets underneath

The 617.XXX,602.XXX,603.XXX,605.XXX and 606.XXX Turbo Charged Diesels...

All had special internally ported Pistons that allowed COOLING oil to be "Jetted"
from underneath by the Oil Jets.

The 616.XXX goes "Naked" into that Pressurized OVEN of Combustion!!!

Also the Crankshafts were "Nitrided" (Super Hardened Outer Surface!!!)

IOW X2 what Katja said.

Adding a turbo results in lower egt's, mine now max's at 1000. Before turbo I could hit 1400. Same ip settings.

Thought the 616 had nitrated, and the 617turbo engines had induction hardened cranks.
