W201 Technical DIY Wishlist
Good Afternoon fellas,
As some of you may be aware Pelican Parts has produced hundreds of DIY technical articles for German Car enthusiasts and a few books as well. Were in the process of finishing 50 DIY articles for the 210 chassis that will be published on the forum in the very near future. We would like to know what types of DIY projects each of you would be interested in learning for the 201 chassis. We will take your input into consideration as we continue to produce more technical content. Feel free to start new threads with other chassis to request DIY projects, if we see a lot of requests for specific projects or chassis's in the other threads we will do our best to cover them for all of you. |
I have a service manual I can upload
|
There are classic jobs with the W201 chassis.
1) M103 headgasket 2) Heater core leaks 3) Sunroof motor & teleflex cable repair 4) Window regulators 5) Door checks 6) Miscellaneous lights and bulbs (center console, HVAC) 7) Handbrake adjustment 8) Front and rear suspension bushings, ball joints, thrust arms, dampers 9) Subframe bushing |

The climate control system troubleshooting. I would cherish DIY details that can be viewed. The manual on cd is a definite bummer for me! Also, I would like to see the electrical schematics where they can be comfortable viewed.
|
+1 climate control troubleshooting. Identify the weaknesses of this car and you will have your to-do list. The climate control is a major weakness.
|
Actually the service manual is free to view..right from Mercedes..

It's there ok, but my issue with it I have, is you cannot read the photos. A lot of the instructions overlap. Trying to page it together is such a challenge from the different years. Some of the information for the years is covered up on top, and you don't know what is what. Then after awhile you just want to pitch it. The thing about it in my opinion is they are up there in age. The plastics and what not are fragile, and I don't like to initiate unnecessary damage. The cost is a factor in it, as well. It's not like when they were metal, and you could straighten out the trial & error issues, and everything held together.

This is all great feedback. Were also looking into offering DIY content for the W202 as well.
We will be offering a lot more parts to the community on-line in the near future with an improved site. The site will be a lot more user friendly so members will be able to order on the web with ease and we will still offer phone sales support as well. If anyone would like us to offer and specific products or brands lets me know and I'll see what I can do. I had quite a few requests for Baldwin filters so were working on offering that brand on the site in the very near future. |
I don't know about the rest of the forum, but I would definitely like to see the wood paneling for the interior of our older benzes offered. I can't find them anywhere. Also, the interior door panels. A lot of emphasis has been put on getting quality parts to ensure that the cars are running at optimal performance, but I would also like to keep my car looking nice as well.

I haven't seen anything about the door panels. I tried to order some from Mercedes (thru XXXX) once.. NLA :( The ones in my 93 190E are coming off themselves. I'm told MB used crappy components. |

I was kind of concerned, if tool rental would possibly be an option? Some of the tasks to be efficient specifically require designated tools.

Sample Tech Article
Here are samples of the format we use for our technical articles; The Mercedes articles will be done in the same manner. Let me know what you guys think. Roy gave us very positive feedback when he looked at these.
Pelican Technical Article: Boxster Intermediate Shaft Bearing Replacement and Upgrade (IMS) - 986 Boxster (1997-04) - 987 Boxster (2005-06) Pelican Parts - Porsche Boxster 986 / 987 and Carrera 996 / 987 Technical Articles |
A whole set of articles could be generated just by focusing on worn out rubber parts. Engine mounts, control arm bushings, rear subframe mounts, driveshaft flex discs, etc.
Rear diff repairs like replacing leaking seals. Rear wheel bearings. Just throwin out some ideas, some of these may already be covered. |

Purchased W201
We are picking up a 201 tomorrow afternoon and will start working on the DIY articles. Do you guys like written DIY articles with pics or do you prefer DIY Video? Both are an option as well.

Hi , I have 2 190e's ... great idea ! a article or 2 about properly lubercating 190"s would be helpful . The service CD dosen't seem to go into great detail on that . Any info would be helpful ... thanks!

W201 Project car arrives (Pictures)
Here are a few pictures of the car, was a 120 mile trip to get the car here. It has a charging problem currently however I was the told the alternator has already been changes so perhaps a draw somewhere, we'll figure it out. Funny thing was the car literally stalled right when I backed into the parking space so timing could not have been more perfect.
It's in really good condition overall, the owner took good care of it. Here are a few pictures. |
Removing interior trim and door panels
Hi, I would appreciate it if you would post a DIY for removing W201 interior door trim panels without damage... so many times these older cars need attention for door lock vacuum issues and door check issues, but you have to get the panel off properly first.
Thanks, Kurt |

Here is a great writeup on W201 climate control troubleshooting for those that asked: Troubleshooting Mercedes-Benz 190 E/D 201 Tempmatic Climate Control System - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum
Personally, I would love a write up on how to replace the Valve Stems on my W201 190D 2.2 , I have the factory tool just not that sure how to do it even after reading the FSM. |

I want to find information quickly and efficiently, so videos frustrate me because they often have lengthy introductions you have to suffer through, and it's hard to navigate to the portions of the content that are of interest. Then, when you find the part you want, a video has low-resolution pictures and you have to inconveniently keep replaying it. Plus, there is no way to easily double check a step in a video when you have greasy hands and are laying under a car. Thanks in advance for working on these articles! It's great to have this kind of support. |
I have owned several W201's over the years. The one I'm driving now is definitely the nicest of the batch. Climate control works perfectly, all windows, sunroof, etc. work fine.
There are currently 2 non-functional systems on my W201. The first is Cruise Control. I have never owned a W201 that had a cruise control system that worked "right" all of the time. The second issue I have right now is the SRS system. I realize that troubleshooting the SRS system can be dangerous and problematic, but I'd really like to get mine working right (get rid of the light on the dash). SteveM. |

I'd like to help you out with the cruise control system. When I bought my w201 back in 2006 its cruise would not hold speed, it would accelerate the car but wouldn't hold anything. Soon after that it stopped working completely. Fast forward to 2012, I finally was able to fix it. It turned out that the cruise control's amplifier had failed. I was able to fix it and since then I've been trying to help other forum members on here and other sites too. Drop me a PM or email (jamesdean59@gmail.com) and we can talk further about it. I don't want to hijack this thread too much. |

I'm happy to see other enthusiasts helping each other out. |
I'd like to see diagnosis of rough running, high idle, poor starting, etc. that seems to plague these cars after a while.

Hello all - we've done a lot of updates to the section since 2012! Here is an UPDATED version of our W201 Tech Article section.
