Help plz, how much$ do I aks for my 300td wagon with a blown engine?

Hi, I have a 1981 300td wagon with only 90,000 miles on it with a blown engine, other than that the car is in pretty good shape. I'm trading it (and some cash) for an 83 turbo diesel coupe 200,000 miles that has the grease conversion already. in general how much should i ask for my wagon? the garage can use it for parts or put an engine in it that they have already. My wagon may need the shocks replaced if they are going to resell it. This is all happening tomorrow, I'm no mechanic and i need advise. thank you!

it's worth around $600 to the crusher...

I think since it's got confirmed low mileage, but a blown motor... (what happened?) it should fetch more than that, but condition is EVERYTHING for these cars.

the SLS system is worth a lot. the seats are important if they are 60/40 and more so if they are leather, or if the third row head rests are there. also the third row itself is valuable. any extras are good. the hatch, and tail light lenses are hard to find, as are the reverse lenses.
it's really hard to ask more than 400 for a non running car though.
the 81 wagon is a one of a kind car though. only 123 with the electronic speedometer. so it's got the same transmission as the 126.

**** car 3-400$.

Scrap prices have escalated the value of broken down cars. No longer can one pick up a parts car for a couple hundred bucks.

That looks like a quality wagon from the one picture on his post. It does enlarge well. Anyhow, being a nice wagon, and if you really think that mileage is correct, (do you have any proof?), I would not jump from it to a high mileage know nothing about coupe. I would find a replacement engine, pronto, and get someone to install it if I couldn't do it myself.

I wouldn't touch a car with a grease kit on it with a 50ft pole. Why buy a car that has a "pre-ruined" engine?

And what do you mean "on it already", does your current car have one? Might explain engine failure at 90k. Thats about 250,000 miles early for a 617, what happened to it??

one day there was oil in it the next day there was none. I kept an eye on the oil because i knew it had a slow leak. I'm not a mechanic as i said before so I dont know what could be the cause of the oil leaking out in a few days. Anyway, thats done with I'm just going to get a new engine, and now I'll even more obsessed with checking the oil than i was before. The coupe was in bad shape compared to to body of my wagon. So, I'm looking for an engine; i found one option for 750 with 215000m. I'm located south of boston.

As much as I'm enjoying my TD I would locate an engine for it. Hard part of course is you will need another TD engine with the pump on it, (or maybe if your original head is good, swap that to a good engine...) Going from a TD to a CD is going to take some getting use to being the CD has so much less room. CD's tend to me a lot more expensive to fix, seals are VERY costly... plus everything from the front clip back is of course CD specific, meaning no cheap parts from donor D's like you can get for the TD....

Personally, I would spend the time and money to have the TD fixed correctly and keep it, but your self admission that your not a mechanic might make this a costly and out of reach endeavor. That said, I knew NOTHING about these cars and using the help sections here, have now become competent working on them in a short period of time... But I like learning new stuff and getting my hands dirty.

So it sounds like you are keeping it?

Looks like a nice car. You could find a motor easily, swapping it isnt difficult if you find knowledgeable help or someone willing to do the work at a reasonable rate. Barter? What do you do professionally or hobby wise? Perhaps someone is willing to trade services? I have done that before.

Very nice looking car.

well I'm a waitress in school for fine arts and math...sooo looks like i'll either be waiting a lot more tables or learning how to replace an engine, and the latter does not sound very likely.

Doing an engine swap is pretty strait forward. Honestly, it takes longer the very first time you do it just because of not knowing, but it can be done easily within 1 day. Of course, you would have to have access to an engine hoist, and a host of tools require to do the job. If I was anywhere close I would do it for you just to help out. maybe there is another member close by that could lend a hand? I know when I did mine I was able to do 99% of it myself, only really needed help guiding the new engine back in place. I think it would be a shame to see a nice looking TD like yours go down for something like and engine when they can be found fairly reasonable.

I have done engine removals & reinstalls on my lonesome, it just takes a little bit of patience, and be sure to label all the nuts & bolts as they come off.

How many members are in the area? Maybe an engine swap GTG is in order. 2 day event and shop space donation. Could be good. !!
