You'll need a new (unused) airbag and a new (unused) sensor, which lives in front of the ashtray, I think. Try to get both pieces from a junkyard car -- they're terribly expensive new. I paid $40 for the driver's airbag and $16 for the sensor at the local Pick and Pull 18 months ago, as spares for my '87 300D. Come to think, I should pick up a set for the '96 E300D, too.

Did the seat-belt tensioners fire? You may need to replace them, too.

You should get access to a Mercedes scan tool and ask the airbag computer what units need to be replaced

At a minimum you'll need to do the computer, any external sensors, the airbag, possibly the steering wheel... Check the repair manual. A lot of components in the SRS system are one time use only.

This is a quote from Uwe Ross, who makes a scan tool for VW cars, but it applies here:

Do your self a favor, if you want to be sure that your airbags will deploy properly in an accident, and perhaps more important, want to be sure that they do not deploy except in an accident, install a control module that has not been in a crash!

This is one area where you do NOT want to try to save a few bucks. I'd rather have no airbag controller at all than one that has "Crash Data Stored" with live bags in front of me!
