W126 Spring Box Installed in a W123.

I have read that a W126 seat spring box, or seat frame will work in a W123. I didn`t know if a second generation W126 from 86 - 91 would work or if they were a little different.

I picked up a spring box out of a 90 SEL, some one had removed the pads and seat covers leaving just the frame. the springs and frame looked brand new, and being a passenger seat it didn`t have much use. also the second gen 126 springs are upgraded a bit. there is a added spring in the front section, plus the round rubber pieces that fit into each corner coil spring to stiffin up the corners. they look sort of look like a piece of pool noodle, but much tougher and dence rubber.

I was replacing the drivers seat bottom in a 240D that has 2 broken springs. worked here all day on the kitchen floor stripping down the 240 seat, scrubbed up the MB Tex, removed the seat tracks, cleaned and lubed the tracks. good thing no one ate in this car, so most of the seat frame pieces were just dusty, hair etc... from 30 yrs of use.

I got everything switched over and all the screws and pieces back in the right order. the 240D pad fit as well as the MB Tex.

So anyone up grading a 123, the 126 seats out of a second generation will work. I measured both seat frames and it is all the same. even set one on top of the other up side down to see if the flat piece around the top the pad fits on is the same, and it is.

Tomarrow I`ll get the back bolted on and see how it feels in the car.

I do, but the house is such a mess and I didn`t get my dusting done.

When the cover is on and Hog Ringed down. the springs have to be compressed enough to get the edge of the cover folded into the trough along the lower edge of the seat frame. the MB Tex has a stiff piece of card board that is sewn to it along the lower edge. It has to be folded over, the springs compressed enough to be able to work this into the trough.

At first I started in the front center, working to each side to just around the corner, then the other side and finally down both sides. had trouble on the corners with the card board bunching up and not fitting in right. plus the side of the Tex was wrinkled.
Pulled it apart and redid it, and same results, plus the back piece was too short of reaching the trough.

Pulled it apart again, fit the rear piece in, then the front went in with less trouble, and is pulled tight w/o the wrinkles and the card board didn`t bunch on the corners.

I had the seat bottom up side down to kneel on, then when done, I attached the seat tracks. suppose it could be done with the tracks on, but would be rough on the knees.
