top speed for a 1985 300d

I am trying to find out which has more drag, the 123 or the 126. Since in 85 they both were available with the 617 turbo and a 288 diff top speed should tell the tale.

Wiki says top speed for the 300sd in 85 is 106.

They don't say for the 300d in 85.

I suspect about the same.

Anybody done a top speed run in an 85 300d with a good sound engine but and 100% stock?

What exactly are you looking for with drag numbers? W123 - .42
W126 - .36
W124 - .31-.32

Thanks! Now if I had frontal area I would be in business for total drag. I think the 126 may have a bit more frontal area.....or not. In looking at them both, I believe the rear of the cabin area to be the same width, but the front end a bit wider on the 126.

My old '85 TD would not go over 95, linkage could have been loose I guess. Plus the wagon surely pushes more air.

I had the 85 up to 100 one time, eng had over 300K on it, was still climbing, but backed off.

Eng was acting up or something, and it pissed me of so I floored her figuring it would blow out the back end (tail pipe) or I would have Rods hanging out the lower end. still wasn`t running right, but I felt better.

No mention of the trans? Engine and final drive alone do not tell the full story.

Well, they were only offered with a standard four speed non overdrive automatic transmission. Am I missing something?

You're not going to get a good accurate result. Even with equivalent engines, the specific tires and wear on the drivetrain is enough to skew it off by at least a few mph. IMO the best thing to do is go off of their theoretical numbers and make sure that you've got a good solid car to get as close as possible. I honestly don't get what you're trying to do though, new project? Also I should mention that the numbers I cited above all pertain to the sedan variants AFAIK.

Final drive ratio 3.07:1
4 speed automatic
1st gear - 3.68:1
2nd gear - 2.41:1
3rd gear - 1.44:1
4th gear - 1.00:1

The later cars have taller final drives. I'd think the W126 goes a tad faster since it slips through the air a bit better.... unless both of them are able to hit the RPM limiter.

I am trying to estimate the fuel economy possible with my five speed od tranny in my 85 300sd. I am getting 35 consistently with my 123 300d euro na motor running 307 diff and the 18% od tranny.

If the 126 has less drag, and it appears maybe to have, with the 288 gears and the od I should be able to get high thirties highway.

I had an 83 wagon that would sit on 100 all day unless you had to climb a hill.
