filler neck gasket.
Anyone ever replaced one and can it be done without pulling the tank? I was surprised a new one from the dealer is less than 6 dollars!

Sure it can be replaced w/o pulling the tank. Open the fuel door, remove the fuel cap, grab the old one with some pliers or Vice Grips. (I use a 6" pair of needle nose) and pull it off.
Good time to remove the door and clean out the recess with some wax/cleaner and make it all pretty. Spray it with some Silicone spray, makes it easier to get it over the filler pipe and seated in the grove where it fits around the sheet metal. I just replaced one last week. got it from Phill with an order. 123 997 35 81, or Fast lane part# W0133-1639171. think it was around $2.64. Charlie

Yes it can be replaced with out removing the tank. It's pretty easy. Charlie states the process pretty well. You'll probably have to take the fuel cap off as well.

I have to replace that gasket every year, and I do not run Bio-D. It seems the rubber can't handle ULSD.

Well quite spilling your diesel! You shouldn't have fuel touching that gasket.

The only reason I ordered one from the dealer is that I have already tried one that cost around $2.50 from ******** Az, which was very different (i.e. cheaply made) than the OEM Mercedes gasket. The OEM one has a lot more solid rubber that fits like a glove and is fuel resistant (I have one in my 240 parts car that's still in good condition). The ******** one is very thin and does not seal well, melts with VO and already cracked in less than a year.

The rubber is indeed sensitive to almost anything and everything, especially biodiesel. I cover the filler gasket with a "diaper" made from rubber sheeting of the sort used for backyard ponds and streams. Scraps of this material may often be obtained free from installers. The diaper keeps spills off of the gasket so that it lasts longer.
