1982 240D Crankshaft Pulley Identification

Hello Everyone,

New to the forum, but I have been gleening ever bit of information I have needed by searching over the past 3 months of owning a new to me 240D. I found everything I've needed thus far...

PO told me he had the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley "fixed" by his indy 500mi. before I bought the car. Pulley had a little wobble from the start of when I purchased it. I'm guessing this wobble helped burn out the water pump from uneven belt tension. I installed a new water pump, and figured I would pull the crankshaft pulley at the same time to fix the wobble.

The pulley is pretty beat up (looks like it got sheared off an flung around at some point), but what is more concerning to me is the fact that the six holes in the pulley for the M8 bolts are oversized (hole dia. is 9.5mm), and the extra diameter in theses holes was filled with epoxy of some sort... so no wonder it was wobbling. These over size holes are not worn... they still have a factory chamfer around them. Also the OD of the back of the pulley that fits into the balancer plate is worn quite unevenly. And to put the icing on the cake... it looks like the crankshaft pulley is offset forwards by a 1/4" compared to the water pump pulley and it had the wrong size belt (13mm instead of 9.5mm)

Harmonica balancer bolt is tight, and no perceived wobble is coming from it...

All a coincidence? Or did the indy who fixed the balancer/pulley replace the original, possibly broken pulley with a used one that's not "fully" compatible? The part number on this pulley is 615 032 1904.

Does anyone happen to have an original parts number for a 1982 240D (AC, California) crankshaft pulley for me to cross reference?

I happen to work at a machine shop, so I have options... but the car is my DD, so I'd like to get it back on the road ASAP

Your knowledge is much appreciated!

Alex

Hi Stokes, you can probably find the number from this page on the "Russian" EPC.

http://mb.ilcats.ru/part/class/1/ccode/F/cat/67A/type/616/subtype/912/group/03//

Here is the page that covers your whole car. You will find it useful.

There are a lot of posts on this forum and in this section concerning the failure of and the best remedy to use in repairing this front end of crank assembly. We loose a lot of these engines, both 616 and 617 because of improper installation while making repairs. It is a critical repair. Don't do it correctly and in 2 or 3 weeks your engine is junk. So use the search line at the top of the page and get set for a night of reading. Also, welcome to the Forum. There is a lot of helpful knowledge here.

I suggest checking your local Pick N Pull for a replacement.

Pulley
MB# 6150321904

On the 240D; It should be identical for all 1982 - 1984 North America delivery.
Try to get the harmonic balancer also, as they must have tapped it for a larger size.

You need to be aware; The crank bolt is factory torqued 200-244 ft lb.

Here is a link to good DIY information.

Thanks Gentlemen!

Those parts numbers/diagrams were exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the speedy replies.

I did most of my homework/reading last night on the harmonic balancer issue/solutions (lots of great info)... but before I dug into the job I wanted to know if my pulley/balancer was the original- that way I know what I'm looking for as a replacement.

I'm in Ontario, Canada. And most wreckers laugh at me when I ask if they've got any w123s! I'm sure I'll find something though...

Cheers,

Alex
