1990 300d leaking cylinder gases out past injector base

hello,
great forums, glad i found it and glad i registered,
i been reading alot of good threads to get my newly aquired 1990 300D up to par,

now, as i was changing the oil i had noticed around #5 injector a black crud, looked like melted plastic, the hood pad is all deteriorated, so i assumed that some just sat there and carmelized there,
so after some updating of the vacume systems, and turbo wastegate modification, i took her for a drive, i must say
WOW, a new car, deffenitly,
but as i was doing the italion tuneup, just down from the house,
on my way back home, after a great 2 to 3 upshift, i heard a paff and paf paf pafd till i shut her down, i coasted home, into the shop,
and i cranked it over to see were it was coming from, and sure enuff,
it was from around the injector base, right were the melted stuff was,
so i poped that stuff away, and now i assume it was seepage building up,
right there were there is a notch in the in the head itself,
i assume to index the prechamber.

i removed the injector, and cant really tell if anything is wrong,
the ball looks great, is there a seal? it was really fine carbon in there under the injector and heat sheild, i vacumed it all out best i could, looks decently clean,

so, i need to know, if the heads savable, before i go buying 300 dollar prechambers (dealer) best i found online was $150 at autohuas texas (in california?? )

thank you for the help

removed injector, now getting ready to remove the ring,
seems tight, cant do it by hand, cleaned it up, with a vacume and some crc powerlube
even a slight jolt with a impact didnt budge it,
i didnt hammer on it, wondering if it could be reverse threads?

has no one ever had or seen this problem?

The Prechamber Retaining Rings have normal threads. People have said these type of things are easier to remove when the Engine is Hot; like after drive.

If you are using the proper Tool I do not believe it is made for Impact use.

Do you have the Prechamber Retaining Rings with the Slot or the Splined ones?

I met one of our Members in a Parking Lot and we removed his Slotted type Prechamber retaining Rings from an Aluminum Cylinder Head (not on the Engine). The Prechamber Retaining Rings that go into the Aluminum Heads have almost 2x the threaded area and were very grabby on other way out.

In contrast the Prechamber Rings I removed in a Junk Yard from a 617; once the turned with a pop were easy to remove. Also many of them did not feel very tight at all.

LEAVE the Pre-Chamber ALONE

For Now...

What you're describing is outgassing between the Injector and the sealing portion of the Pre-Chamber (THE INSIDE BOTTOM!)
The "Trick" here is that the "Heat Shield" (A.K.A."Sealing Ring") IS:
A One TIME USE ONLY DEVICE,AND It MUST BE Installed with the Proper
Orientation! [Concave side facing UP (Towards YOU!) as per picture]

It is not unknown for a H.S. to "Stick" in the Bottom of the P.C. and some
unlucky Wrench installs another on top of it.
It is also not unknown for one to become "Welded" into the P.C. by CARBON
Blow By Buildup!

CLEAN up the bottom of the Pre-Chamber (Keep the CRAP out of the P.C.)
that receives the "Heat Shield" and the Injector and Torque the Injector
(ON TOP OF THE NEW H.S.)to Specs!

ok, so i got lucky, and was able to rent/borrow the tools from a local shop, really nice guy, tossed in a good used PC incase i needed it,
so i pulled out the #5 injector, glowplug and prechamber,
plenty of crusty carbon so i used my little shop vac and small attacmnts and some fuel hose, to clean it all up nicely, i used smaller piece of hsoe to reach onto the cylinder and clean up the piston of any droppings

so i checked over the other 4, and i see seepage around all of them, so i figure, whiles i gots the tools, i might as well do the whole job, so i pulled each and every injector and prechamber, cleaned the bores, cleaned the coners and radius or the sealing surfaces,
rehabbed the prechambers up really nice, they looked well enuff, just cruddy around the sealing surfaces, so i cleaned all that up on each one,
heres a little pictochrconical, i had did 2 before i started the pics, i thought jeesh i should document this.

i need to go back to the shop that lent me the tools and get new heat shields for the other 4, he tossed me one in the pkg to begin with, nice guy,

i cant attach the pics right now, there to large, ill host them from my server and just link to them tomorow, its 5am and time for bed

thanks for all the help guys,
compress_ignight appreciate the input, i started before i read your post,
but i took every precaution to keep it clean, and kept vacume on it every step of the way, and just did them all, i didnt want to have to ask the guy for tools ever again, and i cleaned everything all up nice and new, and torqued the splined rings to 130 newton meters with lucas synthectic oil as thread lube,

now tomorow, wen i get the rest of the heat shields, what is the proper torque on the inclined injectors,
i have tried to find the info in the service manuals on the 124performance file server, but that part of the fsm wasnt there,

i read a few contriaditory posts,
ive read 35nm, but then another poster said that was for the delivery valve,
and read vstech post 60nm, for the 1990 om602.962 with angled injector with splined rings and injectors screws into the prechamber itself,

any help with that id appreciate,
again thanks guys,

Good Job !

FSM calls for 70-80 Nm torque on the Injectors.

[The 35 Nm figure may be part of the confusion of Re-Torquing the Delivery Valve Holders,
After replacement of the O-Rings,Crush Washers and Springs.
GSXR quotes a three stage Torque Procedure.]

welp bad news,

got it back together, still puffing,

so i can see the smoke now, its coming from the rear of the head, and the head gasket is blowed out,

is it common to nlow the gasket out the back of the head? i can see the gasket popped out, and broke,

so on to a head gasket job,

any info i shoud know, before i tear into her?

new headset coming, has all the gaskets and seals, and heat shields,
gonna drop her off at napa, have the valves did, new stem seals,
and a trim if needed, (hope not)
does the shorter effective deck height make much of a difference on cam or injector timing? i know some old gas engines had special timing belts or thicker shims in the gaskets to make up for the head or deck shave.

i doubt it, but i like to ask make sure,

time put her on tdc and start tearing it down,
anythgin special need to do withthe timing chain, other then, make sure to keep it taught so it dont come off any of the sprokets.

thanks

You got a copy of the Factory Service Manual?

You will need it!

gsxr's website will allow you to see the internals of the 602/603
along with LOTS if other goodies:

W124 Performance

This is his R+R of an OM603 (Same as 602 except 1 added cylinder)Head gasket pictorial:

Index of /images/OM603_head_replacement

(I'm not gonna comment on letting a NAPA franchisee do head work on a Mercedes)

If the "Head" is "Skimmed" for whatever reason ...MAKE SURE to follow FSM's
Specifications for REPLACEMENT HEAD GASKET THICKNESS!

the guy who runs the machine shop, in the napa store, is a highly skilled machinist,
he does all the work around here, on everything from stock engines, to 1000+hp race engines, and while i use him for my race motors, wen i asked the MB dealer and the local german shops who i should have refurb my head, they all said that he was the man to see for mb diesel heads as well,
he had the full workup on all the machining on his shop computer, for all the MB stuff,

so far, all it needed was a slight trim, jsut to get rid of some pitting around were the prechambers jet out, looks liek the quench area, all 5 had some slight errosion from the flame front.
and exhaust guides needed replacement, the intakes were spot on,
and valve job, and 2 new lifter buckets, slight wea aptterns on 2 of them, one, has straight mark, the 2nd had an X looks liek these 2 both on cylinder1 i believe, werent rotating, so 2 new lifters are in order, and prechamber shims are on the way,

ill get some more pics posted, i figger while im here, ima do the delivery valves also,
ill try and document that as well,

hopefully head be ready tomorow!!!!

im ready to be back in this puppy

Really

So Many Tales of Woe (or Conquest) Un-Completed...

I used to get all worked up about the Serial Story(s) going Right Up to the
Happy(Unhappy) ending...and then NOTHING...Like the Poster had been sucked
up [along with her/his Mercedes] to Mr. Gingrich's (Soon to be Constructed) Moon Colony.Leaving us all hanging around unrequited.

Now...All the Pavlovian Training is Defunct, and I just:
"Move Along,Move Along Nothing to See Here".
