1982 240d lost vacuum and won't shut off??

I've been having a intermittent problem with vacuum coming and going. (power brakes like normal, then NO POWER brakes using Hulk like pressure on the brake peddle). I got the external(top) check valve from Pierre and sure enough when i removed the old one the internal guts were gone. Found a metal plate and spring in the inlet so got them out with magnet. Alright, it's working again......or so i thought! it is still back to intermittent, when it wants to, operation. Removed the entire pump and upon inspection found the plastic part of the check valve left behind(ah-ha!!) Removed and cleaned the other three little check valves, hope it works as designed when i reinstall here shortly.

Question: why will the manual "push to stop" lever next to the valve cover NOT shut the engine off? It does seem to slow the rpms like it's trying to shut down but won't quite get there. Any ideas?

If your idle is set too high you can have issues with the stop lever not being able to do it's job. Or if the linkage from the stop lever to the IP isn't adjusted correctly you won't get the full throw of the lever to the pump.

Thanks for the reply Bio,
Is there a proper way to adjust these or is it trial and error?

The linkages have specs, that can be found in the Factory Manuals.
As for the idle RPM, with out a tach you basically want it as low as you can while still getting a smooth idle. There may be proper way to set it, but I've never really looked. But on a tired worn engine it can be difficult to get a nice smooth idle no matter where you set it. I'd try dialing it back a little and see if that helps. Also if you have a idle adjust cable, make sure it's set to the low idle setting when trying to use the stop lever.

BTW, tha..tha..thats my stapler. I'll burn down the building!

LMAO!! Great movie!! My Gf just told me she's the movie so I must introduce it to her soon!

Ok i'll look into the linkage settings in my manuals(on CD). The idle may be set a lil high due to me always having the AC on. YES, not having a tach is a bummer!! Can one be retrofitted or added? (right next to my boost gauge?? LOL)

240D tach

You should be able to add a tach to your 82 240D. you have the EGR, right?

Funola installed in his 83 240, have you read this thread?

Why you selling your 240?

Charlie

Hey Charlie, Thank you for your input! Currently unemployed so exploring my options for cash flow. Just thought i'd test the waters to see if someone wanted a quality car in amazing shape. If not I'll just keep it. I love it a little bit more every time i service it
