Drat (again)
Clear varnish these days is obviously just too clear!
Looks like I need to stain it first.

Saturday and a DIY shop...
...the sacrifices I make for my car!
I went for a fake cherry colour that seemed on the test cards (bloody untrustworthy things!) to be about the most correct option available. I'll sand it and coat it in gloss tomorrow and see how it goes.

Not sure if I can be bothered to do any more...
I reckon I've got the colour about right now
I'm not so happy about the grains still showing through though. I've sanded and sanded and sprayed and sprayed and now I'm a bit bored so I might be calling this one done

Yeah Stretch, that was my next question! Matching the color. It looks to me that the thick coating has a tint to it that is necessary for a color match to the other pieces. Most definitely sprayed all together. Color match will be the hardest part for me.
I saw a great video on boatworkstoday.com about using multiple coats of epoxy backed up with multiple coats of varnish for a marine finish that will be very durable under outdoor conditions. Should work great for our center consoles and it would hide all of your grain imperfections. I'm going to try it on a test piece. It's 2 parts and here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqiXZrs5hvM

I actually got fed up with the grainy finish and went back to sanding it again.
I ended up ladling on thick coats of yacht varnish with a brush that was impossible to get on there without leaving bubbles or blemishes. I let it dry for about a week and then sanded it slightly so I could spray a nice smooth coat on top. I'll post up a picture of the results later today if there's enough light for a decent photo!
