Hairline cracks in valve cover '82 300SD

I have been having some oil leakage (who hasn't?) on my 82 300SD. I decided to take a closer look and it looks like I have several hairline cracks on top of the valve cover between the oil cap and the pcv valve (is that what that is?) They are very slight, but you can catch a fingernail on them. Has anyone else seen anything like this? Very odd, in my opinion.

I spread some JB Weld around like peanut butter and it seems to have helped somewhat, but still some leakage under the oil cap, as well. I guess a new one is in the future.

Just wondering if this is a common ailment? My car has 124000 on it and runs like a proverbial top. I have had it for about 6 months now and couldn't be happier.

I have some of those cracks in my VC, and have seen it on others. might just be a surface defect in the MFG of the VC. none of mine leak from these.

Think these has been some threads in the past on this issue. maybe search for VC cracks or some other combination of words.

The Oil Cap leakage is probably from the gasket, and they are replaceable. think on this site (Buy Parts Tab above) are around $2.50. I use the blue one that is for the gas cap and works well.

Do you have the metal cap or the black plastic one?
It has been mentioned that when removing the metal cap, not to turn it upside down. the oil runs between the 2 pieces and then will leak out. I sit mine right side up on a rag. then wipe it off and the edge of the hole on the Vc. don`t have a leakage problem.

Also if you have the rubber "Elbo' on the VC for the blowby connection tubes, they get old and will leak. new one`s are around $4

Thanks for the input. My cap is plastic. I didn't know that the gaskets are replaceable. I'll get both the gasket and the elbow replaced and see if that helps. I do think that the JB Weld peanut butter spread helped in that it isn't leaking near as bad as before. Combination of factors, I guess.

Valve covers are $15 at my local pick a part.

Not worth playing with if yours is cracked.

also keep in mind that ALL the 617 valve covers are nearly identical. the only diff is some models have a tube attached inside for the oil separator, and some have a flat plate.
externally, they are the same.

If you are worried about a match up, take some pics with your phone cam and make sure to take your cam with you.

I noticed this and was wondering what it was. Are they interchangeable?

I would think so, seems to be a baffle (flat plate).
