OM617 cylinder head leak after hot tank, rebuild

The owner of an OM617 had cylinder head and gasket issues.

The head was removed, disassembled, run through hot tank cleaning, and rebuilt.

After installing the rebuilt cylinder head, there was a massive oil leak from the green circled oil journal hole in the pictures.

Here are pictures of the aluminum plug that belongs in the hole.
Note: This plug is NOT available from Mercedes Benz.

He fabricated a new aluminum plug, and pounded it into place eliminating the leak.

Caustic Soda has a way of removing anything alloy/ aluminum !!

Not at all, the caustic would have soaked in to the space between the cast iron and the Al & stayed there after rinsing. The caustic would have just loosened the plug & the oil pressure would have removed it.
Some time put some caustic (drain cleaner) on some Al & watch it fizz, good ( I joke) way to eat Al up & make hydrogen !!!
Collect the gas & ignite it, make your ears ring !!
