i removed the two coolant lines directly above the bolts and now i can get a box end on there but still hard to get leverage. with the box end on the bolt, and the wrench coming off at an angle, i can place a steel pipe vertically over the opposite open end, and get a few good whacks with a hammer but i am afraid of stripping the head of course

can anyone rescue me from this diabolical impasse?

thanks

i just got them both loose by removing those evil many-headed hoses above them which allowed just enough clearance for a little brute strength on a box end to prevail.
more than likely, more cries for help to follow as i proceed...

When I helped with removing a transmission of a 1984 300TDT, one top bolt was already missing.

For the other one I used this:

And still it was difficult. Maybe a small ratchet.

Any chance you (or someone you know) has a welder? Not sure how different the W123 is from the W124 but some cheap Harbor Freight tools made my life a lot easier to remove those top two bolts.

Yeah, the long, long floppy extended socket on a breaker bar works.

I did my 300SD with one of these snap-on 3/8 flex ratchets

Snap on 3/8" Drive Bent Flex Head Ratchet Comfort Grip Dual 80 Tech FHBF80 | eBay

I found it at a junkyard, held custody of it briefly, and lost it at the same junkyard not long after. Merde.
