power steering leak 87 300sdl

had my car in the shop getting an oil change and they noticed the power steering is leaking, they said it would be 1200 to fix and it was the oring on the bottom of the steering box?

does this sound about right in price? and from what i am reading on google searches there is a power steering pump and also a power steering box on this car?

any input would be greatly appreciated!

Typically the seal at the pitman arm leaks. My 420SEL has the same issue, its not a huge leak at this time so I'm not all that concerned. It doesnt drip it just is wet looking most of the time.

For $400 you can get a rebuilt/manufacturered power steering gear box. It should take but an hour or two to install tops. So maybe $150-200 for labor.

No way worth it to have them repair your existing box for $1200 when you can have it replaced for half that.

Yes there is a pump, and steering box.

The price quoted, even assuming they will do a complete R&R, strip and re-seal, is a major rip-off - my guess $250-$300 should be about right. A complete seal kit (A126 460 0061) is only about $35.

The O-rings and oil seal on the Pitman arm shaft and flange, where your leak is, can be replaced without removing the box from the car. A pretty straightforward DIY job, though no workshop would do less than a complete rebuild.

The input shaft oil seal can also be replaced without removing the box – anything else the box must be stripped.

Just monitor leakage and add. My power steering pump leaked and I replaced seal. Not a hard job. Flush ur power steerging fluid every 2 years.

thanks so much for all the input, i feel this shop does a good job but i do feel they are overpriced on a lot of things, going to have to look for a different shop

so there is a difference between the pump and the box on this car?
