If you have the funds, this is all you need:

Mercedes Rebuilt Engines

If you have more time than funds, you're still going to spend $3K-$4K to do the proper job and restore everything to spec.

The fact that you ask the question in the first place leads to the conclusion that the first option would be preferred for you.

I can personally vouch for their expertise with these engines. I had them rebuild the head for the SD. Unparalleled craftsmanship.

I agree with Brian.

To elaborate a bit,

The process is very time consuming, an experienced machinist will go through each and every wearing part and check for wear. anything not meeting the factory specifications is to be replaced. Parts could vary from 1500 to 3000 probably. A mb diesel is pretty labor intensive to disassemble and reassemble.

Once a 617 is brought up to snuff though you can drive it for decades with proper maintenance.

YES!

I bought a 617 long block from them back in 07. Metric Motors only builds Mercedes engines, and have been doing it over 30 years. Talk to Mike the owner and tell him what you need.

I have been to their facility when I dropped off my old engine, and picked up the new baby. I was there another time when Mike was building a gas engine for some old MB model, and got a tour of the place. they have just about every part for about every MB engine. one side is the machine shop with all the latest lathes, grinders, planners etc.... and the other side with the piles of engine parts, blocks, heads cams etc...

Would I buy another engine from them in the future? yes.

I also agree and have been aware of Metric for years -they do it right! Years ago, I had a BMW motor built by a mechanic who was locally well known. His assembly was good but he did not double check the machinist work (later, we learned he seemed unskilled in using a micrometer and other) The engine started to self destruct in under 5k miles! I had to sue him and did so successfully. After that experience and others, I have decided that a crate motor long block is the way to go from a specialty builder like Metric - they are MB specialists and their work is excellent along with a guarantee. There are many steps involved in building a motor correctly, a local machine shop may or may not do a good job based upon their experience with MB engines . . plenty of room for mistakes even with an experienced machine shop/builder. Go Metric, especially if your car means that much to you, good luck!
