1983 300D Turbo Alternator
I am looking for blow-by-blow instructions on how to replace the Alternator. I've seen remove bolts, remove wiring, etc. but I'm too novice for such instructions. Any help appreciated.

Well that is probably more writing then many people want to do for the type of work involved. But why do you want to remove the alternator? Did you know that many alternator problems can be resolved by merely replacing the regulator mounted on the back side, (opposite the belt side). The regulator assembly when replaced also puts new brushes in the alternator. If you have good hands, good eyes and a small screw driver it can be changed in 30 minutes or less. That might not solve your problem, but it does fix most of them.

I should also add that your "blow by blow" description of this job probably has been written previously and could be found either here on the Tech site or below in the Diesel Site on the forum. Just go to the search at the top of the page and type in "replace alternator in 300D". You might be surprised at what you will come up with.

The alternator is still charging but we are getting a noise when it turns and we have a little play in the alternator shaft. We believe the bearings are going out. I did a fairly extensive search on this site and others but just haven't been successful.

welcome to the forum.
it's a fairly simple job, but all the other accessories need to be loosened to get the belts changed. if your belts are in good shape, you can forgo this step. ( I recommend changing the belts when something wears out though.) ya just unplug the three wire socket from the back, and loosen the three 19mm bolts from the back of the alternator, and loosen the one 13mm nut from the bracket (((be extremely careful with the adjuster nut, as it's really thin!!!) use lots of PB Blaster penetrating oil on the thin threaded rod, and fill the nut with it) I'll move this thread to the diesel area so more members with your vehicle can help!
