w116 window regulators

Own a w116 300sd and have been adjusting and replacing my window regulators for 10 years. I'm tired of pulling the door panels off. I recently found a few websites that sell manual window regulators and i'm wondering if anyone on the forum has any experience with them. I went to the Dorman website and I found they sell window regulators for my 300sd. Is there a particular website that is favored or recommended? I know I will have to drill holes. Please advise

I believe squiggle dog replaced his with some manual regulators from the parts store. Maybe he'll chime in but do search his posts.

I did it and it was the best thing I ever did to mine. Like you I was tired of fixing them all the time. These have worked fine. The ones on the site you list Dorman are for a 240d 123 and not the 116 chassis. I found four for you on ebay if you are interested. I will post the link.

I only need 2 for the front. How did you find them so fast. The link you attached shows that the bidding ended on the item. I'm glad I did not order the dormans. Thanks for the info. I will have to set up an ebay account to purchase items. Thanks for the info. If you find some more please let me know

No problem here they are re-listed again. I think 99 dollars is a steal for them. I have been so pleased since I replaced them.

Purchased the regulators off of ebay for 100.00 bucks. Package came complete with window cranks and a center console without the window switch cut outs. A direct fit to my surprise and everything seemed ok. I then went to crank the windows up and down and noticed that a lot of force is needed to roll them up. I guess I have a couple of questions. I did not lube anything because I first wanted to see how easy the windows would roll up and down. Any suggestions or recommendations on how and where to lube so as to get the best glide out of the window. Could there be something bent, like maybe the guide rod where the window is secured (vertical guide). I noticed that the only thing that can be adjusted, really, is the bottom horizontal guide that is assembled onto the bottom of the window. I will remove the panels and upload some pictures later on the week. Feel free to comment...Need help

I would grease them up pretty good and that should help. I would also make sure the window seal is not binding them up anyplace as well. I know mine seemed a little tough to go up and down until I greased them well.

I'm assuming that lithium grease is still the way to go, right?

I converted my W116 windows to manual, but I used original W116 regulators from a Euro car.

I've wondered if the Dormans work because I believe it shows the same part number fitting the W123 and W126, which doesn't seem right to me (and many auto parts stores think a 300 is a 300, whether it is a W116, W123, or a W126--one example was a radiator shop trying to sell me a W123 radiator for my W116--"What do you mean this radiator doesn't fit your 1980 300SD? Our catalog shows it fits all 1977-1985 300 diesels.").

I just pulled 4 regulators out of an 85 Euro W126 280SE. I removed the front door windows after some fiddling around exactly how they go together, and the window attaches on the bottom. much different than the W123 windows.

How exactly does the rear window glass come out of the track? The regulator is out, removed 2 10mm bolts that hold the track for the channel. the track moves around, but not enough to get the glass to come out, to angle it out of the door.

Is the 126 glass the same for the electric regulators as with the manual regulators? going back to PNP tomarrow, guess I could take another 126 door apart and see any differences.

As for the Dorman regulators, dorman gives the same number for many models...only one way to know for sure and that would be to buy and install. Last I checked such regulators were under 40 bucks.

Manual Windows Working?

Hi,

Can you update us on your manual window project? I know you got the set from ebay and installed them on your 116...but they were difficult rolling up and down. Did the grease fix the problem or are you still having trouble? I have an '80 300SD 116 that I'd like to convert, and hoped to get a recommendation on the best source for these manual regulators. Thanks!!

I greased them up pretty good using lithium grease and they are working fine. I believe they could glide up and down a lot smoother but I haven't taken the time to adjust or see what else might be going on. I 100 times do not regret converting. I did get help from Dieselman in finding them on ebay. They are genuine mercedes regulators. Very easy to install. Direct fit. Making the hole on the door panel was only a matter of positioning the door panel on the window crank(without the crank) and then using a razor to split the vinyl where it pushes out. Perfect alignment.
