Need more specifics on where the oil is coming from. Broken oil cooler line? Look in the shop recommendations here for an indie.

Oil filter if recienly changed for example may be a simple source of the leak. Sounds like all the oil may not have been lost and engine damaged in the process.

Yep, could be a leaking oil filter lid. Maybe also a failed turbo oil supply line? What exactly were the symptoms before the leak was discovered? Rear main seals don't typically dump a bunch of oil at once. Are you sure it's engine oil and not transmission fluid?

my friend is smart , knows diesels and i am sure they are paying attention to it, i do not think it got damaged, think thye caught it early

but he did say no lights came on like check engine, etc
which seems strange to me if the oil was going down?

does it have a canister oil filter like the OM617? i remember on my first oil change on a OM617 i did something wrong and didn't have the cover on right (maybe forgot the big o-ring) and oil was pouring out of the top...

Yep, it has a canister style housing... and a big o-ring.

i am not there , i just bought this car from a dealer in north carolina, i had it very well checked out at newmoyer indie shop in wilmimgton, nc

they did replace a couple of o rings that were leaking oil but i dont know which ones

and also the intake gasket

oil had been changed a few weeks ago
fuel filters, air filters etc were changed

i guess the car ran perfect until this last couple of hours

they pulled in to get gas and saw the puddle under it when they moved it

all he said was it looks like it is coming from the back of the engine, he is a smart guy and thought it was oil
he is going to get under it in the morn with the daylight and see if he can figure it out

could be nothing major, maybe just a hose, who knows

but they are on a time sched and will have to leave it at the shop and go
unless is can be fixed in 15 minutes
i will have to fly over and get it in a couple of weeks, real pain in the ass and a hassle for my friends who were doing me a favor bringing it back

i will send them all this info, i am sure he will look it over good and try to determine what it is
they dont want to leave it unless they have to

not the end of the world but crap, i thought it was in perfect mechanical condition, i had the mechanic do every single thing he possibly wanted to do on it

and i thought i would have it fri nite

i would not even care if it had broken down here or close to home, that woudl not be such a hassle

oh well, such is life

Was it hot there? Were they running the AC? Are you sure it's not water from the AC? On the 123's that water ends up in that location roughly.

i wish, but my friend is mechanically smart and knows diesels etc, he would not mistake that

the guy at newmoyer is good about explaining stuff and i think between the 2 of them there is a good chance they can at least diagnose it by him looking at it and ryan from the shop walking him through what to check etc on the phone

so even if they have to leave it i hope to have an idea how big a repair, etc
