603 EGR Delete and Emission Inspection
Recently I've been looked at a couple of 603 engines that have the EGR deleted. Does this pose problems for those who live in states who do an emission inspection on such cars? In RI, they do an opacity test.
Thanks.

Diesels should be exempt as far as that goes... leave it intact just put a BB in the vac line

In RI they definitely measure the density of diesel exhaust.

The EGR has nothing to do with opacity measurements. Effectively they're not testing it, though I'm sure some places do a visual "is the stuff intact" check.

RI is still doing opacity on a 25 year old car. Even MA doesn't do that anymore.

Actually....I think you're right. I just read that they do the test BUT you don't fail if you don't meet emission standards. So I'm all set.

In middle TN they do the opacity test too if you live in or any county surrounding Nashville and your car is newer than a '74 , i had my SD go through emissions about 3 months ago; it registered a .03% with 10% being the limit. i'm thinking since California doesn't even require diesel emissions testing that it's just a way for them to make some money.

In California on Gasoline Cars part of the Emissions check is visual. The Tech has to say yes or no to items that are supposed to be on the Car and enters them in the Computer.
So if they ever decided to pay attantion the Diesels there is going to be a visual check to see if an EGR is connected or not. They also used to disconnect the EGR Vacuum Hose and hook up something like Mighty Vac to see if the EGR worked or not. Also out here they test you Fuel Cap.

1998 and later diesels are now smogged in California. Earlier diesels are still exempt and are not inspected at all. For those living in places where older diesels must be smogged, it's probably best to leave the EGR valve and its plumbing on the engine and use a removeable defeat. The two easiest defeats are first, a BB in the vacuum line to the EGR valve. When the car goes to be smogged, remove the BB. Second, for later models where there's an electrical connection in the EGR valve, lack of vacuum causes an error in the EGR electronics. For these engines, a home-made solid gasket can be fabricated from sheet metal to replace the factory gasket between the EGR valve and the intake manifold. Now the EGR valve can open or close all it wants but the gasket prevents exhaust from getting sucked into your intake manifold. For smog testing just put the factory gasket back.

You'll probably pass an exhaust opacity test. You'll probably fail an underhood inspection.
