Ole Blue has a problem
 

Despite the severe rust, some of the things I do miss about the late Beirut Taxi (Besides the trunk triangle) was how basic it was - hubcaps, manual windowws. stc.... Beirut's replacement Ole Blue, my solid-body '82 240D has developed a loss of power to both fuses for the power windows. My wiring diagram shows the power-feed to both window fuses comes from a power-window relay, but not it's location.
I would be very grateful if someone could tell me where the relay is hiding.

Also, I was thinking of someday bypassing this relay so that I wouldn't need to turn on the ignition and cycle my glow-plugs everytime I want to open the windows on this car.

I was looking at the diagrams and you're right there is a relay that provides power to the power window fuses. They make no designations for the relay though.

The window relay is located behind the instrument cluster. See pdf page 4 in the above link. Picture is located on the same page.

Is that rear defogger timer relay common to the W115, too?

My defroster works so long as I keep pulling the lever, but goes dim when I release it.

My guess would be that that is more switch than relay. In my experience relays tend to be a bit binary - they either work or they don't.

While my primitive internet device was unable to open the attachments, many thanks to JamesDean for the final text that steered me last night to the relay's location. (Also honorable mention to John49 for today's photo)
Ya! It was the relay. Now 'temporarily' bypassed.

I do not know if anyone has mentioned it but the Power Window Relay shares a Fuse with some other items.
On my 84 300D I believe it is Fuse #12. Consulted your Fuse Chart or wiring diagram to see what Fuse the Power Window Relay uses.

In my case, fuse #4 controls the relay-coil.That fuse and all related circuits checked out OK. The ralay itself died. For now, with it bypassed, I don't need to turn on the ignition and cycle the glowplugs to simply open a window.
(I may get spoiled and leave it that way!)

Well, today I stopped at the Virginia Beach Pick-N-Pull, and found 'ImBroke' extracting some turbo bits from a 300SD. And there laying loose on on the inner-fender were three relays like the one I needed. So I asked him if they were his, and when he replied no, I grabbed them. So my windows are workng 'properly' now, and I have a couple spares for the 240D or 300TD. (looks like the AC and aux-fans also use the same relay) Also grabbed amale harness connector with the same pin layout as the relay, so I may decide to install a properly-fused relay jumper later when I pull the cluster again. I noticed oil seepage from the guages, so it looks like I'll be installing one of my spare guage units when I return to Virginia-Beach next month.
