bad thermostat= funny gauge? 1982' 300SD
quick question to all, if my stat is starting to go bad, would it make my dash temp guage ocassionally bounce? some times it will go upt like 85 and i hit the top of the dash and it drops back down to 80, i no that it should be running aroud 80 due to the temp, but i just wasnt sure if the stat would fix the bouncing around,
-thanks

If hitting the dash affects it, it's not the thermostat. My 240D had "jumpy" gages that I fixed by adding a separate ground wire to the instrument cluster, apparently the ground connection wasn't solid. It may not be the ground, but it's definitely an electrical or gage issue.

thats sounds like an idea, but should i just rule out the stat?

I don't think you have any reason to question the stat at this point. Even if the temperature was going up to 85, that's not a problem. The 80C stat doesn't even fully open until about 95C. Do you have any symptoms of overheating?
Check the round electrical connector on the back of the instruments. Try running a temporary ground wire from the metal frame of the instruments to a ground under the dash. The fact that hitting the dash changes the reading makes me pretty sure it's not an actual temperature issue. |

My car had a lot of quirky electrical issues when I first got it going as well, I heeded the advice of others about touching up connections everywhere with a wire brush and some dielectric grease to thwart corrosion/moisture, and all my little gremlins seem to have retired now. While I had the dash out to repair a bad clock cap and broken odometer, I cleaned up and greased all the pins and connectors, as well as the areas where the backing plates of clock and speedo overlap, as this is part of the grounding circuit to the clock & seat belt/glow timer lights, and where the speedo backing plate overlaps the circuit board as this is also part of the ground. Since I have done that the dash has been working quite well. (As well as a few exterior lights that also got the same treatment)
One thing that did get my curiousity though, my car does not have cruise, so what is the little black looks like a hall effect sensor module for on the rear of the speedometer? -Chris 80 240D w/617 motor |

I believe the ground for this comes across the top and makes contact under the screws that hold each board to the cluster. The metal strip behind the speedo was black on my 380sl. I cleaned it up and the problem seems to have vanished.
Other people suggest disassembling the gauges. I do not think that is necessary or possible for the average person. |

Sudden jumps in the temperature gauge are also caused by a bad temperature sender.
