This is a good reference manual that for most folks that have or are contemplating buying one of the W124 E class Diesel cars:

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Owner's Bible: 1986-1995

It is a nice reference that you can keep in the vehicle. It is not a comprehensive repair manual but provides a great overview of the 124 series, how to do maintenance, what to look for when buying a used one, trouble points and some basic modifications. Well worth the less then $30 price tag with free shipping.
