The REAL w123 roadside tool kit

Last night the belt on the 240 whipped off and the car overheated, about 9:30 pm not far from whunter's house. He put it back on, since I was on my way to a two-day work task and wasn't really dressed t do the job.

I had a box of typical MB tools, which, surprisingly enough, did do the job but not easily.

I have therefore decided to put together a list of specific tools which one would need for working on a 616. Not SPECIAL tools, just specific ones.

For example: a 1/4" drive 13 mm spocket and a joint or 6" wobbly extension ( front PS pump bolts )and a 13mm box wrench (rear PS pump bolts ) are needed to hold and loosen the PS pump bolts easily, so that the alternator can be accessed, replacement alternator + coolant pump belt can be easily installed.

I'm starting to assemble this list just for common specific jobs that make repairs following a bread-down easily and expeditious.

Contributions welcome, then we can possibly make a sticky.

Thanks!

One thing I can think of would be a wrench to fit the large bolt on the secondary fuel filter. I carry one in each car, its something like 19 or 22mm. Also a can of diesel Purge or clean diesel fuel to fill the filter should you need to change it.

The secondary filter on the 616/617 is something like a 24mm, the one on a 603/606 is a 19mm.

A quality multihead screwdriver. Choosing a good one also gives you a nut driver for most clamp screws.

An LED flashlight.

Hand cleaner and some rags.

Couple feet of both stranded and solid wire

Just keep Roy (whunter) in the trunk. Saves you from getting your hands dirty.

Having some sort of cutting tool can be a lifesaver. Also spare hose clamps.

I thought about that, but then I'd prolly have to feed him and supply coffee and cigarettes too, and that would upset my budget!

I had a trusty set of original Mercedes tools for a 123, including reversible screw driver and a large (12") adjustable wrench. Plus a spare belt!

The other tools I mentioned like the universal joint, box end wrnech were extras, the Felo screwdriver was part of the tool kit.

I will check on the size of the fuel filter bolt.

I didn't need them for this but two pair of flat welding clamps would keep all fuel in both hoses around the little primary filter in case that was blocked, without major fuel spillage.

PLus, what spare parts? It's only by laziness that I kept extra alternator belts in the car!

one other thing i keep as well is some injector return hose and some fuel hose as well... the fuel line is for when i need to make an emergency under hood fuel tank...
I also carry rags, spare fuel filters, diesel power, stock tool kit, small 3/8" socket set, hammer, scissors, a jack stand, silicone repair tape, 2.5 gallon jug of diesel, 1 gallon of new oil, screw drivers (both Philips and Flathead), old belts (just in case), different sized adjustable wrenches (3 of them), utility knife, regular knife, 1/2 breaker bar x2 with a single set of 1/2 sockets, 16 gallon aux tank, some rain gear (jacket and pants), LED flash light x4, a set of metric and standard wrenches, also a D-ring shackle, rope/cable hook x2, 20ft tow strap, and the last and most used on the side of the road tool: my AAA card lol...

edit: i forgot to add pliers and wire cutters, along with extra wire, cooling hoses, coolant, atf, distilled water, jumper cables, hand warmers, candles, flares, signal mirror, whistle, and space blanket...

Either a set of disposable coveralls or a pair of old workpants and a tshirt (for Canada you could add an old parka from the thrift store). And some disposable work gloves.

A 12v mini tire pump. A can of rad stop-leak. JB Kwik and/or JB Weld.

My observation would be that whatever you need when you break down, will be the very thing you have in the trunk... of the OTHER car that's in the driveway back home....

I keep a rubber mat that I got for free from the guy that delivers them to Autozone. I just lay them flat as my carpet protector. It comes in handy in the event of my going mud diving to work on the car. I also keep fluids, injector return line, filters with tools to change and belts.

My wife made tool storage bags out of old blue jean legs. She cut them apart, stitched pockets to fit wrenches etc then use the seam as a tie to keep secure. That way the wrenches don't rattle.
