Does anyone manufacture an R4 to Sanden kit for the 617?
I do not have the time nor will power to build my own. I am looking for a kit like this:
Amazon.com: Air Products Air Conditioning Conversion Kit: Automotive Just installed on my 735i and works fantastic. I really would not like a kit full of hoses, the compressor, etc as that will just jack up the cost. I want only the bracket as I will build my own hoses and purchase a compressor on my own. The place in E. Texas (European Cooler Air) makes one, but the kit is $625 + shipping... with bracket and compressor only. I am hoping for a price around $200, but if not I will end up going with the ECA place. Found this for you W123 guys... Thanks |
I also am looking for a bracket to mount a Sanden compressor on an OM617. I had to eliminate the compressor on my swap because the R4 interfered with the subframe. I plan on fabricating one, but if one is available that would save a lot of hassle. Haven't found one yet.

The only Sanden conpressor I have seen is on a Euro 123 in a PNP. I pulled it thinking it would fit my 617.952. no fit.
Here is a thread where I posted pictures of it. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/233365-alternative-compressor-mount-euro-w123.html This one is made by a company in England as I remember. contacted them to see if they still have them available. replyied that are NLA. Later on I found another one, but only a few pieces. first one is made of aluminum and second one made of steel. Member 1980SD, made one for his 80 300SD. think he started with the bracket made to up grade from a York to Sanden. Charlie |
Thanks for the link to the 123 p-flow condenser auction. Here's their site:

Here's my saga:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/301246-compressor-bracket.html It was a lot of work but worth it... |
I emailed the Klima guys, they are apparently working on a bracket. Will keep everyone posted.

im interested

They were unable to disclose an approximate price point as the product is not yet available, but seeing as the PF condenser kit for the W123 is pretty reasonable to me... I would expect the Sanden bracket to be reasonable.
The cat I spoke with is named Matthew. He also told me they would offer the bracket with or without the compressor, depending on the end users needs. Perfect for me as I have a spare 508 sitting on the shelf. You early W126 SD guys should message them too as you have lame condensers. Only '85s received updated ones like the late W126s. |

The price for the P-flow condenser kit sounds fair so I imagine a bracket will be fairly priced as well. I'm with you on around $200... |
For $200, I will be the first in line. :)
|
so you are saying I will not get great performance from an R4 and my stock condenser in my 1984 and I need to replace both if I don't want to melt?
|
Having gone through hanging a compressor on the BOTTOM of one of these engines it'll be interesting seeing how they mount it. I wonder if it'll be aluminum, steel, available during our lifetimes etc...
The bolt-on condenser outfit looks sweet! |

Condenser is the biggest issue... it cannot dissipate the heat fast enough due to the tube size. R4 is not a great compressor, but the condenser is the biggest issue. MB also updated that water pump pulley, fan blade, aux fan size, etc around '85. |
guess I will add a condenser to my list of air conditioning goodies to be replaced
|
Email that place, you may be surprised. If they offer a direct swap PF kit for the W126 SD, I may just buy one too.
|
I have a rotary compressor which I took off the texas used 280e motor that I had. It has a mercedes benze label on it IIRC. I am not sure if it is good or not but looks like it could be and bolts on where the york came off.
I'll try to see if I can find it. Is there a way to check it to see if it is good? Sorry, just noticed I got off topic. You are looking for one for the 617. |
York to Sanden, top mount
Might not be applicable to this thread, but it is a top mount if underneath is tight:
Hope i'm not committing my 2nd sacrilegious act. |
I've been fallowing this years AC threads. not sure if this is the thread to post this in, but I emailed Klima earlier today after reading about their parallel flow condenser. I asked if they were working on them from the w126 chassis. seems they are already in the works and their hoping to have it out later this year. Hopefully in time for summer.

I talked to a guy in California who does this conversion. I'm not sure if I still have his contact info. But I do remember he said this is the only way to make a w123 cool properly using r134a.

I just got an email back, and the kit is about $400! OUCH!
|
Another POS R4 is about $240 new, the cost is not that much more for a reliable compressor conversion system...about $350 more is well worth it. I gave up trying to seal my new one with stepped ports and dealing with leaky used ones. Never again. I could have long since paid for this conversion considering all the money and time I have wasted with those R4 units.
I have owned my SD for nearly a decade and have probably around 10-15 months of a working R4 system. Pitiful. |
Maybe we (the PeachParts collective) could make a quantity purchase and save some $ on each kit. If they were closer to $250, I would not be having this conversation....Rich

I have two 240D Euro parts cars with US aftermarket a/c systems. Both of them have Sandens mounted in the lower left. The bracket is quite simple. A few years ago I googled around and found several aftermarket brackets for mounting the sanden on these engines.
At one point I was considering putting together a kit like this and did a poll on this site, but no one seemed to be willing to pay enough for it, to make it a worthwhile venture. Mounting the compressor and an idler will be the biggest challenge and that really won't be too bad for someone with welding and fabrication skills. Fabricating the hoses will be straightforward auto a/c shop work. |
Wow, $400.
Looks like I'll just build another one for my 2n'd car... *sigh* I've been waiting for this but that's a bit spendy for me but probably worth it to get away from an R4. I wonder if it would work with a 709 compressor? http://www.klimakit.com/wp-content/u...t-Contents.jpg REENIGNE ESREVER :D |
Grossly overpriced...
Someone will create a pattern for a laser cut bracket for $50 or so The hoses should probably be done at an A/C shop anyway. |
I have not seen a photo of the compressor mounted in the car, but the bracketry looks well thought out and appears to be of good quality. However, $400 is a lot to spend in addition to a compressor and the proper (I guess it is needed) "K" head. I think I will try another R4 for now in my 126.....Rich

I asked about other compressors, they said they should fit but cannot assure as it was designed around the 508. I put an Alpha unit on my 735i recently from AC kits which is a 155cc 10 piston version of this 508 style... and my conversion kit was made for the 508 style. The Sanden part number is the 6630 for the R4 -> Sanden. Of course the material is not $400. You are paying for their R&D plus profit for the kit. If it is too expensive, make your own. This is just like buying anything else. Do I wish it was a bit less? Yes, of course I do. When all the time, lost refrigerant, multiple R4s, labor, etc is calculated I have spent far more than the $600 this kit will cost in the end. I am finished with the R4. |
