Strip it an see what condition the inside parts are like - there will probably be someone (next week?) asking for a bit. A little money maker - probably a better way than selling it whole - it will just take for ever to get rid of all of it...

Yeah, I would like to dig into it, yet don't have the room.

Well I dunno then really - have you got any other use for it?

If we lived closer I'd have it for bits - I like bits - but for the cost of shipping I might get two perhaps three on a really good day over here...

Give it to a wrecking yard.

You can still take it apart to see how it ticks and then send it to the wrecking yard.

I would love to have it, I'm not sure whats wrong with mine yet but again, I could probably get one from the bone yard for $300, however I will pass on the advice Roy here gave me, "take it apart and get familiar with how to rebuild it" If I had the garage space, thats exactly what I would do if I had an extra it's the weak spot in our cars and if you can get familiar with how to repair them you be DA MAN!!!

PS, I'll make space if you really want to see it go to a good home

I'd be interested in the Valve Body.

I'd be interested in the Valve Body. What did it come out of and what is the serial number of the tranny. I took mine apart and I'm not 100% sure I got it back together correctly. Would love to have one for a reference.

no seriously, look around, you dont find too many shops that know the car, let alone the transmission

Yes, I know what you mean..mine started slipping and we continued to drive it to the point it is in need of a rebuild. I think we will be studying Army's write up on transmissions after the head gasket job is done. He did a great article on it, with really good pictures.
I can only imagine what a shop would charge for rebuilding this transmission....it just won't happen that way... we'll be rebuilding our own and a spare trans for parts would be a real smart thing to have availible when the time comes. Seems like if it has the Mercedes name on it... it is assumed you can afford to be ripped off by some shops.

Where can a good quality rebuild kit be found....and are there any in particular to avoid. I think most do not include the plates but rather just the friction discs and that would be one good reason to have a spare as I think those plates are expensive.

If you have a 722.1 transmission then the write up I did should help. But for a 722.3 / 4 transmission you really need to get hold of the either the ATSG manual or the German language FSM on CD. I haven't seen an English version of the original German chapters for either the manual or automatic transmission in an electronic (CD or DVD) format. I understand that they were translated and printed on paper - but I've never seen those either!

My main reason for writing up the 722.1 transmission rebuild was because of the poor quality of the ATSG 722.1 manual. It seems as though (back then) ATSG made photocopies of photocopies and sold them. The pictures in particular are really bad - if you have a valve body in bits and you want that together again and you've only got the 722.1 ATSG manual then I reckon you're stuffed!

Since writing "that bloody thread" (which took about 10 times longer than to do the job!) I've discovered that the German FSM has beautiful pictures and a very good description albeit in German...

Army, If only I had unlimited resources, I would fly you to FL for a "teaching vacation" to help me rebuild one on the bench and have Benz party's on the beach, and we'd make a niiiiice DIY on the 303 too

There's nothing to it - honest! Just take your time. Think of it like lots of little jobs all joined into one. Don't look at the trees - look at the little twigs!

I might be getting to the East coast but quite a bit further North of you next year... depending on whether I can get through customs or not of course...

Your real problem is going to be how you are going to be able to get a junkyard past security on the way back. I almost got put in jail in Paris for trying to bring back some DS19 brake pads. Even my explanation ,en francais, cut no ice. In retrospect, I suppose they did look a lot like Semtex ...
