finding oil

Hi all
Here is the problem i am trying to install a frantz filter on my 83 300sd and need a place to tap in and get oil under pressure. I took out the oil pressure sending unit and it is a washer compression fiting so i don't think i can place a "T" in there and make it oil tight. May be some one on this site will know where i can tap in. Or if there is some place to get such a "T" that will work. I found a place to dump the oil back in . The plug in the driver front of the head this will work, Well guys what do you think?
Thanks Bill

Bill,

At the bottom of the oil filter housing, there should be an oil feed line going to the turbo. Its got a banjo bolt (I think you need a 17mm wrench to loosen it) securing it to the housing. You might drill and tap through the head of the bolt to get a "T" going, but I'm not sure if there is enough room. That's the only place I could think of. If you had a w123 diesel it would have been easier since there is an oil line going straight to the gauge in the instrument cluster. Good luck.

I am assuming that you are trying to put in a Frantz TP filter, a bypass filter? I would not use the turbo feed or return lines for a bypass feed personally, the poor turbo needs all the flow it can get. I would take a look at the oil cooler lines, tee into the line going to or coming from the cooler, it won't make any difference. Just be sure that you do not obstruct the flow much with your fittings, you are trying to pull a part of the flow is all. Remember that the return to the engine needs to be into a non-pressurized part of the engine, tee-ing the return into the other cooler line will result in zero flow through the bypass. The oil filler cap can be drilled and tapped for the return or you can get a drain plug kit for a trasmission pan at your local parts store and put it into the valvecover. Hope this helps.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought the oil cooler only gets oil when the oil temp gets hot enough to open the internal thermostat in the oil cooler housing (similar to the radiator). If this is true, there will be times that there will be no oil flowing to the cooler and therefore, the bypass filter will be useless. Also, regarding tapping into the turbo feed line, when you "T" into something, it becomes a parallel circuit, so theoretically you get the same flow rate, so it should have a negligible effect on flow to the turbo. I hope I'm making sense, its been a while since I looked at my fluid dynamics books.

Yes it is frantz bi pass filter.
Where is a source of banjo bolts in metric? Was thinking of getting another turbo line and cutting and welding fitting to attach hose. Also how can you tell what size metric thread you are dealing with. Must be some kind of tool out there?
Keep it coming guys almost there.
Bill
