Is this car imported to north America?

I am not aware of an 88 300D.

Are you in N. America?
If so, there was no 1988 300D, only an 1987 300D. I suppose
there might be an 88 300D somewhere else in the world, they
get more diesels than we do

Either way, you _probably_ have an OM603 variant motor
which does not require valve adustments like the older OM617
motors did. They stopped bringing the OM617 to the states
at the end of the 85 model year.

Valves

It was regestered in the uK in 88. The valves are listed for adjustment in the service schedule but the haynes manual is very vague and recommends that Mercedes do it. It is a six ccylinder single overhead cam.

We would love to see a picture of the car and a picture of the engine compartment. Not only are we curious about what you have, but someone can probably give you more tips about the valves if we know what you have.

The values on the 87 300D do not require adjustments.

A year makes a big difference.

loubapache,

Is that right? I don't need to adjust the valves on my '87 300D? I only just bought the car so haven't checked out all the maintenance yet but I just assumed the valve train was just like my '85 300 but with an extra cylinder. Do the '87s have hydraulic lifters or something that means no valve adjustments necessary? If so, the irony is I was assuming the 6 cyl. would be easier to get at because there is less "stuff" on the cam cover that needs to be removed.

Irg:

Yes, the 87s have hydraulic lifters (OM603). I have one.
