Looking for instructions on how to take apart diesel engine

Hello. I'm new here and am not very knowledgable on cars, but would like to read up on how to take apart my diesel engine. I drive a 1992 300d and would like to take it apart and build it back together for the sake of learning, experience, and good ol' fun.

Also i'm pretty sure my head gasket is blown.

I highly recommend you learn how to do the basics before you take apart your engine for a serious overhaul.

I know what brain surgery is, I think I'll take a crack at it tomorrow.....

I hope everything is OK Joe. You seem a bit testy in your last post.

On top of learning the basics, reading the manual, studying any threads he can find, and saving up a bit of cash for the parts, he should also make sure he has another car to rely on for maybe a year or two while he works through everything.

That's why I have multiple MB diesels.

Maybe best to find a dead motor some place & practice on it first. One that is destined for scrap metal, that way when you have finished with it, you can send it back on its journey.

sarcasm is hard to detect on the Internets....

If this dude wants to tear apart an engine, let him have at it. I'd love to do the same but I would need a spare engine to do it on.

Welcome to the forum.

How many miles on the engine? If you are not sure about the head gasket, do a compression/leak down test to see where you are at.
The parts for these engines will be a bit pricy depending what you will need, or how deep you dig into it.

Do a lot of reading on the links WHUNTER posted, and listen to what he has to say.

It's very difficult to advise you properly due to lack of info.

Do you have metric tools? Do you understand the metric system?

"Not very knowledgeable"-- we don't know what that means.

How about experience level on things mechanical? How much do you have?

Do you realize the investment you have to make, to complete this task successfully?

What manuals and tools? What about a an area to work? This is impossible to do in the kitchen of your condo....

A few things:

Be sure the head gasket has failed before taking the motor apart. What is the car doing? Have you done a leakdown and compression test?

Second, it takes a good set of tools, jack and stands, crane , engine stand , parts washer, some way to get the parts to a machine shop.

Before you dive in to a car engine, find a old lawn mower. If it does not run, find what is wrong and fix it. Then, after it runs, take the engine completely apart, install a set of piston rings, new connecting rod, shaft seals, rebuild the carburetor, sharpen the blade, and ,make it run again. All of this should take a couple of full working days. Use it to mow the lawn for a month to make sure the motor will keep running.

After the mower is running, go to the local scrap yard / auto salvage and buy a junk motor. Take it apart and figure out what broke, reassemble. No use buying gaskets or bearings, the goal is to get a feel for a fullsized engine.

If you have survived all of this, taking a run at you car might be possible.
