Ditto on bypassing the NSS. It is there for a very important reason. I was trouble-shooting a "no start, no sound" on one of our cars in the church parking lot years ago. I had a multimeter and had decided "something bad in the starter relay". I was considering jumping around it, when I found that the NSS was open to ground. Rather than jumper, I poked my head in the cabin and found the lever in "D". My wife had driven that morning, and was the one complaining "won't start". Those watching were impressed with my skills, but I should have first done the "let a man try it".

If the car starts, the NSS is defective, as you're bypassing it.

Make sure the transmission is in park or neutral.
He did that already. It does jump the NSS but it also jumps the ignition switch so it's not a definitive test for a failed NSS because the problem could still be in the ignition switch or the switch wiring.

Yes, jumping the NSS

Either jump it at the NSS or look at the color of the wires and jump them under the dash somewhere. It wouldn't be unreasonable to think MB used the same colors on the SD as the D.

If you don't want to jump the NSS, just replace it, then you can get the answer.

so i found a wiring box above and to the right of the acceleration pedal, had six wires, i jumped the purple with the purple and white stripe with the ignition on and nothing happened. so it cranks when jumped from under the hood but doesnt crank when jumped from under the dash. so ignition switch?

does it make any sense that my ignition switch went out right when i was having to replace the shifter linkage bushings because i was having to shake the shifter to get the car to start and the car was tough to get to lock into park?
