temp sensor 300SDL

My temp gauge on my 87 SDL barely moves up passed the 40 degree mark after running.

So i'm guessing the sensor is bad??? How would I check that?

For the price I may just get a new one and install, where exactly is is located on this car??

Possibility...

Could be that the thermostat is stuck open. Then again, might not be.

Stuck open != leaking. Just means coolant circulates right from a cold start which makes it difficult to get to operating temperature.

An engine at 40*C isn't uncomfortable to touch. Can you leave your hand on the valve cover after driving (not idling) for 20 minutes? You'll injure yourself if you touch the valve cover for more than a second if the gauge indicates 80*C.

If you have a logical explanation for coolant loss associated with an open thermostat, I would like to hear it.
