603 Head Removal

Having a problem with final removal of head. Seems to be stuck by the chain tensioner area. Please help!!!

Have removed all 26 head bolts and 2 allen screws forward of cam gear and all attachments from turbo. When I lift head off, it is "stuck" in the front at the chain tensioner area. This is my first time doing a head job so any advice would really be appreciated.

Also, I have separated the timing at the master link and have marked the chain and sprocket.

Thanks!

How DO you properly remove those pins? When I removed mine a long time ago I actually bore a hole on the opposite side and tapped it out. hehe... FORTUNATELY... i drilled exactly where the pin was.

There's a puller you can buy for the purpose. I think FastLane sells it; if not, google "guide rail pin puller." You can also make your own tool from a bolt, nut, and washers.

Oh yea, make sure you thoroughly clean out the treaded ID of the pin and run a bottom tap down into it. You want as many threads in contact with each other as you can get. Also, during reinstallation make sure the threaded side is facing out.

Go to the top of this page and click on the Buy Parts button, then select Special Tools. Choose Section 05, "Cylinder Head, Engine Timing." At the bottom of the first page in Section 05, the very last tool is the one you want.

FastLane sales help support this forum so we try to support them.

In addition to following the other removal/insertion instructions posted here, be sure to thoroughly clean the pins with fine steel wool before installing them and make sure the holes are clean and free of debris.

I would like to ask the opinion of other forumites on the wisdom (or lack of same) of putting a tiny film of oil or anti-seize on the pins before installing.

I always put a little RTV sealant around the pins at the very end (where you screw the tool in) to insure I don't get any oil leakage out from around them.

Yeah, you're right -- that's what I put on them. Well, I knew it was something.

Try the tool rental program; sorry, I don't remember the link -- it's here on this forum somewhere.

It is located here, it is hidden in the condensed sticky thread.
