Primer pump problems? 1983 300TD wagon.
Hello,
I am currently attempting to get my 1983 300TD Wagon (The Queen Mary) to run. I have dropped the tank, cleaned it out, Changed out all of the filters, cleaned the hoses, and hooked them all back up. I replaced the battery as well, and got her cranking. However, I only was able to get her to run for about 10-15 seconds, and she never started again although she kept turning over. The period where she did run, I had the throttle all the way down, and it seemed like she was just idling; she was roughly idling at that. I realized that she might have an air pocket in her lines, and I cracked and bled every single banjo gasket, and primed her pump. However, the primer pump squishes fuel out when I used it. Would this present a problem with getting fuel to the IP, or is it supposed to do this? And if so, how could I fix it? Is there a kit that I could buy, or would I just have to replace the whole thing? I also sprayed some B-12 engine cleaner into the air filter tube to get her rolling. I've heard WD-40 is the way to go, but it didn't work very well so I just used B-12. Still, it didn't take, so right now I'm waiting for the battery to charge again. On a side note, The Queen Mary was run on WVO previously, however it has a heater conversion kit on it and has run for 55K miles with no problems. It has just been sitting for four years. Thank you in advance to everyone that replies! |

Primer pump should be replaced. Are the glow plugs working?

Yes, it seems the glow plugs are working, but only from a superficial standpoint. The dash light glows, and it takes the usual 3-5 seconds to warm up. Is this evidence enough that the glow plugs are working? or would I have to take something apart?
Also, where could I get a pump from for a good price? |

I just ordered the part that I needed from the store online. Thanks a ton. As for the glow plugs, do you think that they are working?

If you emptied the Fuel Tank and the main Fuel Lines were empty of Fuel that is an awful lot off Air to get out and a lot of pumping on the Hand Primer just to bring the Fuel up and into the Fuel Injection Pump Housing.
Loosen the Fuel Injection Hard Line Nuts at the Injectors and crank the Engine till you see Fuel coming out. If Air gets trapped between the Fuel Injection Pump and the Injectors it compresses a lot but moves only a little. Loosening the Nuts allows the Air to escape quickly.
