late w124 side cladding q

Im posting this here in DD because this is mostly where the crowd hangs out and i have a diesel

The EPC shows that the late W124 with cladding should have strips of tape between them and the body at the upper sides, my car is missing them.

Is this some special tape or just like a piece of thin foam tape?? I dont think it should be sticky on both sides because the panel has to slide to come out.

May be foam, to stop water from running between them?

Hmmm
I will try to look at the 90 parts car I have, and see what it looks like (it's a wreck, and the panels are damaged anyway...

I looked at the 95TE I have, and it's got a foam pad about 8mm thick, the entire width of the cladding. hardly a thin strip. but it's only stuck to the cladding, not to the body of the car.

hmm - I may need to remove the cladding then to check, 8mm thick foam is plenty thick.. Does it cover the entire cladding from inside? must be a closed cell foam to be waterproof.

Some time ago I ordered some for a cladding upgrade to my early 124, and this is what arrived. It's just Scotch brand Pressure Sensitive Tape. I believe it's to be applied to the top of the cladding, just behind the chrome strips.
