Screw with washer in hub w123

I took this screw off thinking that I had to to change the rotor on the rear brakes and now I can't get it to screw back in because it seems too short. Any pointers?

Well if it is the same approximately 6" long screw you took out, it can't be too short. You might have to put a jack under the hub to slide the axle shaft a little further into the wheel. If you don't have an extra jack, you might try putting the wheel and tire on and setting it down and that will force the axle further into the hub.

Yep, check the axle from the other side and make sure its seated in there properly, might have to wiggle it a bit by grabbing the shaft while pushing on the bolt to get it to slide back into place.

Unfortunately, all is not good.

The photo shows the screw.

It also shows the lack of the cone shaped washer that sits at the face of the hub which the screw rests against.

In the current situation, the screw is doing nothing. The axle is free to move right out of the hub and the screw will go along with it. You might as well not have the screw.

The washer is a one time use item and requires a specific torque to deform it the precise amount.

Well I will have to check mine also. As I recall, when I put the rebuilt axles in the 85 about three years ago, I received new bolts with a flat washer. I put thew on tight, but do not recall that it was tight enough to deform the washer. I will have to double check that!
