Transportation Forum

Awhile ago ( I cant remember the original posting ) Daw_Two and I had a small Idea, and I'd like to see it spread really. There's been some discussions on it here and there but I'd like to see more happen...

We'd like to see a Transportation network around the forum. If you are traveling to a state/part of the country for a small fee if there was something that needed delivering you'd take it with you and deliver/meet the other person along the way. It's a great way to not only help and meet the forum members (which is quite fun, I've met several of you already) but it will help keep our cars on the road. So what do you say? Good idea? Crap Idea? there are so many of us that travel.. It'd be great I think anyways

The farm tractor / construction guys do this kind of thing. It seems to be a extension of the classified ad section with people posting " Going from XX to YY" or " need item moved from A to B "

There is a web site called " Uship ". Think of it as ebay for shipping where those in need of transportation post and shippers bid. The intent of the site was for shippers to pick up fill in loads when they would otherwise be empty. However, be aware, you will get lots of retail bids in the process.

I had a skid steer shipped from 4 states away at 1/2 the cost of retail because the shipper was running empty to pickup a load. Skid steer was 5 miles from the guys home base and he was literally driving past my house to pick up a load at the other end of the state. All of this was set up in a matter of hours of posting the shipping request.

Be aware, not all of these guys have a ICC number and are using " Not For Hire" as a way of skirting trucking laws.

San Diego to Pheonix

I run back and forth two to three times monthly.

Dang. Just returned yesterday from a coast-to-coast trip - San Diego, CA to St. James, NC via DFW, Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Raleigh, Wilmington, Atlanta, Birmingham, Jackson, DFW and home. It would have been great to meet up with some forum members along the way.

The bad news is we were in the Corvette, so parts would have had to be pretty small, but I can think of lots of parts that would have worked... and if nothing else, an excuse to talk MB diesels and meet up with great people.

Aware of Uship... sometimes their prices are alright, other times not so much. this would be to meet members and help them out if you can, and without a ton of hassle

Bump this topic up again. I'd like as many responses as possible

I would be happy to meet other posters, yet don't think there is much of a need for this service.

So my vote goes to "not sure".

I understand that. My goal atleast is moving parts around that are a pain to ship/move through normal means Ie; a seat (or more if you have the room) I believe there is a couple rear windows for sale in the sale section too. Stuff like that. and if a member is meyandering that way anyways and has the room, match made right there,

I understand if you were just driving thru.....but if ANYONE ever is planning an overnight stay in Memphis, I always like to show off the collection of various Mercedes one used car lot always has.

Mostly for bigger parts

This idea I had was really for "bigger" parts....you know the ones you want, but the shipping is more than the cost of the part. Like a 300TD hatch or windshield from a hatch.

Here are some threads about my past trips:

Or an engine, transmission, rearend, front fender, door, dash, really nice whole front seat, etc. You get the point. When I'm Mercedes parts roadtripping in my former big truck, I usually would make over 4 stops at various forums places to drop off parts.

Aquaticedge 06-13-2012 01:49 PM

huh. a vote for insanity. and here I thought I put it on there for grins and giggles... well, Majority is still winning.

tbomachines 06-13-2012 02:20 PM

I go from Hartford to Philadelphia area back and forth quite frequently. I'd be happy to take anything that would fit in my little hatchback. For full on cars though, I'd also have to go with uship (and that's what I've done in the past)

Aquaticedge 06-13-2012 02:25 PM

yeah, Cars are another animal completely. unless it can be driven, and the other person is willing to drive. this is pretty much for parts though

Air&Road 06-13-2012 06:02 PM

Sure, I would be interested except I don't go anywhere any more. Too bad I couldn't have participated when I was covering five states and driving 60 or 70 kmiles a year.

charmalu 06-14-2012 02:45 PM

I think it is a great idea to help each other out in any way we can. just have to remember to post in this thread or the other one that originally was posted our intended trip.

I just drove from Santa Cruz, Ca. (on the Monterey bay, 60 miles so. of SF) to Carson City, Nv. 300 miles. I could have moved something along the way.

August we are going to Portland, Or. I could pick up or drop etc... something along the way.
