EGR disable, 96 E300D

How do I disable (not delete, as I may need to re-enable at some point) the EGR on a '96 E300D?

All I've been able to find is info on how to do this on a turbo E300, but mine is naturally aspirated.

All you have to do is to unbolt the EGR valve, slip the metal gasket out, make a duplicate that is solid (has no big central hole for exhaust gases to pass through), and install it in place of the one you removed. Keep the old gasket in case you ever have to put it back. No codes will be thrown.

Also works on 1995 and possibly on 1997 E300Ds.

Thanks man, I'll give it a shot.

1997 E300D

Bought gasket for EGR and used it as template to cut a solid gasket using galvanized roofing flashing from Home Depot. Used industrial/heavy duty scissors to cut out exact shape, then drilled holes for the screws and installed it.

Works well.

Pabster, Do I understand correctly that you put a solid gasket on a '97 E300D? Did you get a check engine light? I was led to believe that this approach was good on a '96 but would throw a CE light on a '97.

No check engine light

Changes in the '98-'99 turbo engine allow it to sense whether there is flow through the EGR valve but the '96-'97 NA models cannot.

There are a number of differences between the '96 and the '97 NA engines. I believe there is a sensor on the '97 EGR that is not on the '96, which I was told would sense a lack of exhaust flow and set a CE light on a '97. Since pabster seems to have a '97, I was hoping he would confirm that no CE light was set.

I was hoping that the EGR flow sensor was not added until 1998 but you may be right. We need pictures of the '97!

I have had no cel light come up. So it works for my 1997 E300D and the car performs well. I do keep the OEM gasket around just in case if I need it.

I had to clean a lot of diesel "goo" from my intake manifold and crossover pipe and the air chambers. So it wasn't a worry for me to give this a try. I think this works for 96 and 97's, but not 98's and 99's. Perhaps other members can confirm one way or another.
