ran out of Fuel in my newly aquired TD...

of the 4 stations nearby where I ran dry, ZERO had diesel... one had Kero, but I'm not that mean to my car with the #22 head...
there was a food lion there, so I went in, grabbed a gallon of elcheapo vegoil, and a pint of fuel treatment, poured it in the tank, and drove calmly to the nearest Diesel station...
filled up, and haven't had any issues. car ran just fine on vegoil... my helper riding with me was just amazed.

the fuel gauge was sitting on 1/4, when I ran totally dry. I'm guessing the lines are either reversed, or the gauge is damaged somehow. I burped and filled the tank to the BRIM, and only got in 14.5 gallons... I'm thinking it's pulling in via the return line. I'll compare it to my other TD driver, and see where the lines are connected. I may pull up the carpet and see where the lines are connected in there as well...

That is the beauty of diesel car. D2, Veggie, Olive oil, WVO, WMO, ATF, etc etc, you name it. You can skip the fuel treatment. That is over the top.

the reason I have just gotten the TD I have is because a friend of mine runs SVO with nothing done to his car...no purge nothing, he is a bit more careful in the wintertime, cuts it 50/50....thats it...its a beautiful engine thats for sure. I can't wait to be driving to the beach for free on WVO instead of the 100 it cost me in my other car...

Doing that is a sure way to destroy the motor in a short amount of time. You can't just dump it in and go. One of these days his motor is going to get hard to start, then not start at all, due to coked prechambers and stuck rings.

Sigh.

I saved $2000 on fuel! I only had to destroy a $2500 car to do it!

It's nice your car has a heating system and good purge design, because WVO CERTAINLY can destroy a motor. and, this car can drive to the beach AND BACK on 60.00 of Diesel... no problem.

I hope I have time to come out and assist you with your car.

Yeah, my wife took my car and complimented it by saying that she rode in luxury, yet it sipped fuel like my daughter's 95 Escort. There's a lot to be said for these cars - if you take care of them.

I am certainly not against a little wvo once I research a bit more, but I would love just a fine running diesel right now for sure.

So what is the correct way to efficiently use wvo? If any? Sounds like there are two very strong sides to the story?

Highly filtered, water removed, and fully heated tank/lines/filter to the engine with an auto-purge system that puts it back on diesel prior to shutdown and during warmup. These proper setups cost close to $2000 just for the equipment needed on the car, let alone the processing equipment to do with the WVO at home.

WVO put straight into the car is like a person smoking, it might be fine for a while, but eventually all that slime and grossness is gonna get ya.

Making Biodiesel is relatively simple, requires no separate tank, and for the same or less $ for strainers, storage, etc can be done. There is a Beckman centrifuge on Charlotte CL - not affiliated, but some use this method. I have made B100 and found it to run fine. It is actually a little quieter.

You have experienced the result of the fuel strainer in the tank being partially blocked. Had it happen on my cars and solved the problem by running a can of seafoam thru it. You might be sure to have a couple of primary (see thru ones next to the injection pump) filters handy and a Phillips screwdriver #2 handy. Also check the condition of the fuel lines both supply and return. These seem to go bad after 20 or so years. You would think that MB would make them to last for ever

Typical of a wagon tank ,its a flat bottom tank compared to the sedans so readings showing close to a 1/4 full are deceptive. When drivng my 300td I always used the 1/4 gauge as the low gauge.

I made my own biodiesel and used it for about 1.5 years. You will eventually have to replace the delivery valve seals!

As I understand it, a 617 doesn't have any rubber components (O'rings) in the IP, but the 603 does.

If you use bio routinely, you'll to swap out all rubber lines, O'rings, etc. with viton.

Agree!

Oh, and my 300TD will take about 15 and that's it. Also, when that little light next to the fuel gauge comes on, I know to head straight for the fuel station. It's very unforgiving compared to the 300D.
