Cannot remove idler arm bushings - stuck
I replaced every piece in the front end of the 1980 W123 300D.
Except the idler arm bushings which I could not get out. I left the old ones in and just kept going. Now the alignment shop says that the idler arm bushing wear is keeping them from getting a good alignment. Now I have to go back in there and finish the job. Can anyone tell me they have been stuck and figured it out ? I have air hammer, punch and sledge, tried all the force I could gather. Now I am determined and need a solution. Thanks .

Are you saying that the bolt came out, but the two bushings won't?

Yes Chad300tdt. Sorry , should have made that clear.
I could not get the bushings to come out. Looking at the new bushings I could not see any reason they would not easily come out. Looks like they simply slide out. Anyway, no problem getting the bolt out and getting the arm off.

I've done two so far. On the first the bushings practically fell out. The second one was tougher. The bottom bushing came out with a light pry but the top was stuck. I used the old bolt as a drift to hammer out the top bushing with a 3 pound sledge.
I don't think there's anything too close if you use heat to loosen it, but the rubber and oil will probably smoke and burn.

.
with the arm off ~~~ set the bushings on fire and let them burn to the point of just needing a push to drop out ~~~ take a chisel and split the bushing shell and push it out ~~~ clean up any burrs and press in new bushing .

I recently replaced these bushings on a 123, and found that the bolt had bent for some reason. This forced the upper bushing to get stuck into its bore. It just takes some persistent persuasion from a BFH and a suitable drift. They've all succumbed to that approach in the past.

A hammer, chisel or whatever is available will work with enough determination.
Best of luck with it!
