A/C work: wrench sizes needed?

I've opened up my A/C system before, and I'm about to do so again in the next few weeks. From what I remember, it was a mix of metric and SAE sizes: 19mm and 22mm for the expansion valve, 7/8" and 1 1/8" elsewhere.

I don't have any SAE tools (used someone else's previously), so can anyone tell me what sizes will be needed?

Also, is it possible to put a suction line filter on these systems? If so, where is a good place to put it?

Thanks,

Curtis

7/8" is 23mm 1-1/16 is 27mm
also, 19mm is 3/4" and 22mm is 13/16"

why would you want a suction dryer/filter in the system?
if you do want one, it would go in the... suction line. you would have to cut the hose, and clamp the dryer into the line between the txv, and the compressor...

a better option would be to flush the lines, put in fresh oil, and a new reciever, that'll be the best for the system.

a suction filter is to catch debris from a failed compressor, and to clean dirty oil before it gets to the new compressor...
not needed, just FLUSH properly the evaporator, and the lines, and the condenser, then change the TXV, and the compressor, and install a NEW receiver dryer!

Once you get above 17mm saw tools fit fine. If you're on a budget or otherwise challenged, you can get by with saw except for 10mm
Or less.

never heard of "saw" tools.
I assume you mean "crescent" style adjustable wrench?

I got annoyed and had to make one. Harbor Freight is good for cheap tools that you will only use a few times and can grind on if you have to.

Ah, this reminds me. I need to replace the expansion valve in the wife's 300SDL. Maybe I'll do it now. What's a ridiculous location to put it. My father, a GM man since the 50's, made fun of me inverted with my head in footwell replacing it in another SDL last year. I simply couldn't argue that particular bit of odd component placement...
