I take the car out on the highway, get it totally up to temp, then park it on a COMPLETELY level surface, and check it in park with the car running.

Yes, to make sure the transmission is fully warmed up take it out on the highway for a good run, like vstech said. Just warming it up at idle won't fully warm up the ATF. Finding a level spot is the hard part ... fortunately my driveway is pretty level and my garage is totally level.

it has to be completely level.. as in, get a spirit level and check the surface you're parked on. MB also recommends using a leather rag to wipe the dipstick with

Get out a level? I have noticed a lot of gas stations in my town have very level fueling pads. that would probably work wouldn't it?
I kinda like the whole leather rag thing, its kinda like a handkerchief for my car.
